Well, I have spent alot on my $350 MAK90 since I got it. I have replaced the furniture with K-VAR black plastics which required substantial trimming on the lower handguard front and back to fit and I have installed a Tapco (Gordon) trigger group and a K-VAR black pistol grip.
I have ground down the rear tang on this rifle in preparations for installing an underfolder in a fixed open position. This MAK90 already has the underfolder holes cut out and the back of the receiver is slanted so standard buttstock is not happening. I have replaced the smooth top cover with the AKM style but this took a good amount of fitting as well. My bolt carrier would hang up on a fold in the cover.

My current problem is removing my old piston to replace it with my new one. I have found the pin that is holding the piston in place (this was difficult to find) and I have drilled in slightly on each side which was very easy to drill with little effort. I just cannot punch out the pin in this thing. Does it have to be drilled all the way out or does someone have another suggestion. I think I will stick the bolt carrier in the freezer overnight and see if it shrinks enough to knock it out. Maybe I need to buy a drill press this weekend.

Krez,

I spent a good 45 minutes one night using a punch to knock out the pin holding the gas piston in on my mak90.  Thought it would never come out.  It is a solid pin and you could drill it out.  Red Star Arms has info on the procedures but I think you use a 3mm drill bit.  Mine, I just knocked it out, cleaned the threads real good and then used the red locktite to secure it.  At least it is not as bad as Saigas.  On my first saiga we could not punch it out so we drilled it out and found out that it was a roll pin.  Then, it took what seemed like an additional 30 minutes to get the gas piston off.  The threads were tight.  That one I locktited as well.  Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Does anyone else have any MAK90 conversion wisdom to provide, this is my first AK excursion so any advise would be appreciated.

I got the piston retaining pin out today, I froze the whole assembly and beat it out partially with a centerpunch and the rest with the pin punch. I figured out why it was so hard to get out, it looks like someone (previous owner) tried to get the piston off without removing the pin. The thing was bent to sh*t.
Got the new piston on, now I am just waiting for the PMKMS kit to get here so I can install the underfolding stock from the kit in a fixed open position.

Why dont you just "wait" for September so you dont have to put stock in fixed position.
