Got it in trade a few years back. Still haven't shot it.
It's a milled receiver. It has a 5 digit serial number (no 9X prefix designating year) on the left side of the receiver, #16XXX. Last 4 digits on the bolt carrier match. Dust cover serial number is different, but is still the proper non-ribbed cover. It is a CAI, St. Albans, VT. It is stamped MAK 90 on the left side of the receiver, NOT "MAK 90 SPORTER". The bottom of the receiver, in front of the magwell, it has the Norinco logo, and says "Made In China" below the logo. It does NOT say "Made In China By Norinco". ETA: It has 386 inside an oval on the left of the receiver It came to me with what I believe is the Choate drag stock and black hand guard. There is no nut welded over threads on this thing. It looks as there were never any threads. I can see machine marks from the muzzle back to the gas block, all uniform like, so I don't believe it was ever threaded. The front sight does not have a hole for muzzle device detent. There are no holes in the handguard front thing (I don't know the nomenclature) for a cleaning rod. Bayo lug is not there. It looks like it MAY have been there at one point, but very professionally ground off and blued. From my research, it doesn't appear to be a 93 import due to the lack of a 93 prefix in the serial. I thought maybe it was a Type 56 that gun hung up in limbo when the 89 ban started, but maybe not since it doesn't have the welded muzzle nut covering threads, or the holes for a cleaning rod. I know the rule of these things is that there were no rules. Just wondering if any of you MAK experts had seen an animal like this. Also, I flipped up the lever that holds the top handguard into place last night, now I can't get it to lock back down. Any help there? (I am describing things in terms like levers and hand guard front thing... So if anyone can point me in the direction of where to acquire proper nomenclature for AKs, it would also be greatly appreciated!) |

you have to seat the hand guard all the way down. rubber mallet works. The 386 produced milled receivers are the same as the Poly tech Legend. They were produced from 90 to 94.. top notch stuff. Got the gas tube retaining lever flipped back down. As you said, it wasn't completely seated at the block. Thanks for the 386 info confirmation. I had read that it was probably from the same line with the 386 mark. The rifle is well used, but has an amazing trigger and the total fitment and quality oozes. The finish is showing its age. The thing is not a collector grade. I think I am going to do the IWD furniture, G2 disco only (if possible) and a US muzzle device after threading. I'll need some guidance on replacing the lower handguard retainer and gas block for the full deban. |
