I put these in the AK general, but I thought they might get a few looks here too.
It's my first Polytech, I've had a hankerin' for one ever since I got my Norinco SKS and Mak90...

What happened to the 74 style muzzle device that you said came with it? My brother has a 56 and his came with both a slant brake and a 74 style when he bought it. Here are pics of his

ETA: theres also some good information provided in that thread about the background of the 56

thanks guys! I love this thing..   can't wait to shoot it.

As far as the brake, I pulled it off as soon as I got it home. It looks correct(for a 74 brake) but has two flats ground where the locking pin meets it, and it has one set screw on the side...   minus the set screw it is about 50% better looking than the tapco 74 brakes

Actually, I think the Chinese either had barrel nuts or slant brakes on those particular AKs (I can't remember which).

For the semi-automatic, commercially imported ones from Polytech they seemed to have come with either one but looks like mostly a muzzle nut.

Please don't hate me, I got a little carried away with the wood!
I know it looks brown, but it's not really. It's more red. I'll get some pics with it in some natural light.

Silley, what did you use for a finish (stain color and poly,Tung oil ect...)?

ETA: what are you doing with the 74 style brake?
2/21/2011 1:51:12 PM EDT
[#19]
The stain I made from food coloring, mixed with denatured alcohol and rubbed onto the wood with a clean rag. let it evaporate and it leaves the color behind. It's time consuming, as I spent about 3-4hrs staining. Probably 20-30 coats total. Then one light coat of tung oil just to keep the color in and protect it some.

I was going for the Legend look, if you couldn't tell.

Your dye job on the wood looks good, and the color is nice - but I gotta say that I am a little let down to see a very good condition old rifle like that modified from the original condition.  It's kinda like finding that 1990 Ferrari (referenced earlier) in old Grandpa's barn that has been sitting in there since 1990 and has 200 miles on it.. all original in pristine condition, then you decide to go paint it because you didn't like the original color.  Just a little bummer.

I've been to Cabelas a lot of times but I rarely look at the guns, I did not know that they had stuff like this or I would have been checking it out every time I go there.  Good find.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
As for modding a collectible rifle..    I have no excuse. I love refinishing furniture, and I couldn't stand the blonde wood. I've always liked the color of the Legends and other dark wooded chinese Ak's.

But at least I didn't put a rail on it with a foregrip bipod

It's your rifle so you can do what you want with it. My choice was easier as I had a NHM-90 so it was fubared from the start. It looks good and you're happy with it, that's all that matters.

I guess you're right. I also don't plan on getting rid of it, so it really doesn't make much difference, as long as I don't SBR it or weld a shovel handle on the back of the receiver. hahaha

Also, does anyone have a good source for a 14x1 LH tap AND die? It appears that the previous owner screwed on the 74 brake with set screw, and didn't back the screw all the way out first. So one of the threads is a little galled up. I've got tons of taps and dies(mechanic by day) but nothing like that. I want to clean it up and put a muzzle nut on it. Also wouldn't mind cleaning the old brake up and using it on something else...

I found a couple commercial tap and die makers, but I was looking for more of a firearm specific dealer.

I just bought one for a SAR-1 project I'm working on. IM me and we'll figure something out.

I love the blonde wood on the Chinese rifles.

Sorry to hear you have such poor taste.

Nice rifle.  Sweet deal for $950, but a screaming find for Cabela's GL.

haha, thanks! I might get an iron wood set and shellac it, leaving it blonde.
In retrospect, I would have been smarter to leave the orig wood and stain an Iron wood set...    but oh well. Hind sight is 20/20
It's not like it is a show piece, or still in the box. I plan on shooting it, and enjoying it.

Next step is to get some video of it...   my chinese drum fits in it nicely

Hey guys, thanks for all the awesome feedback!

I just got a package from CNC Warrior today, It's the long slotted cone flash hider and also a short PKM flash hider. The Long one was for my Romy project(I was going to cut the barrel and cut the front sight, reweld the sight to the gas block and pin & weld the hider for a 16.1" length)

The short PKM hider is for my Yugo RPK, as I have been short one compliance part, unless I'm using a US mag, and I only have Tapco 30's as far as US mags go....   they look silly in an RPK. So I figured the PKM hider would look slick on the Yugo, and also allow me to use any mag I want and still be compliant.

Well, I tried the long hider on the Polytech after fixing the muzzle threads with a new 14x1 lh die. And......

It looks pretty awesome. So it might stay on there.
I was hospitalized this morning due to vomiting/dehydration, and I am still really weak, so it will be tomorrow before I get pics. I had to wait till my wife went to work to post this....   cuz I'm not supposed to be internetting until I feel better...

So you all should feel lucky, as my first priority was to post on arfcom, throw up or not.

It looks good although I like the original finish better. You paid a very good price, it is worth more than that. At least 1200. Maybe more based on gunbroker bids lately.

I stripped the wood and I am refinishing it. I had some light spots in the stain and the stock was much lighter than the rest, so I made some new stain and I currently have 8 coats of tung oil on it. I plan on getting the surface smooth, then steel wool to take down the shine.

Pics to follow

Beautiful!!!

That's the food color dye job you did right? How did you like working with the Tung oil?
5/11/2011 4:33:36 PM EDT
[#47]
yup, that's the stuff!!  60 drops of red/40 drops of blue/10 drops of yellow

Probably about 20 coats. It penetrates well, but it doesn't get very dark until you really start saturating it.

The tung oil I love. It gives it this yellowish hue....    just makes it beautiful.

That would go great with my NHM91, I mean, Chinese guns suck. You should send it to me for disposal.
I also like tung oil. It's the most moisture, bug, rot, fungus, and caustic acid resistant of all the oil finishes. It doesn't reek like linseed, and it doesn't leach out like linseed does when it gets hot. It seals out water much better than linseed.
I want to try teak oil on a stock, but am apprehensive since I've never used it before.

I have some hippie-liberal orange stripper on my SAR1 stock right now. Got to get rid of that fugly chocolate syrup varnish that Cugir put on it. Looks to have some nice beech underneath.
I'm still waiting for my IWD RPK stock set to come in for the NHM91. Should look much better than the Bishop bunghole stock.
