A friend gave me a MAK-90 for me to sell.

I believe it to be post ban.  The only markings are:

The NORINCO seal above the trigger guard on the left side of the receiver,

MAK-90 SPORTER on the left side of the receiver behind the lower handguard with CAL 7.62X39MM below,

The SN (94 prefix) is on the left side of the receiver just below the cut out on the dustcover,

A partial SN is on the left side of the cover.

I can't find any other markings or any importer's name.

What do I have / is there anything special here?

Is there anywhere else I should be looking for markings?

Not as quick a question as I thought.

Pics [if possible] would help

All MAK-90 rifles are post '86 machine gun ban and post '89 AWB.

If the rifle has MAK-90 on it (short for "modified AK 1990") then it is one of the many Norincos that were modified in 1990 to circumvent the '89 AWB (evil features removed).  In your case, the prefix on the serial number indicates the rifle was imported in 1994.

All MAK-90 rifles were imported prior to the May 1994 ban on Chinese imports and prior to the 1994 AWB which didn't take effect until September of that year.   So in that regard they could be considered "pre-ban".

But honestly though, the only people that really use the term "pre-ban" with regard to MAKs are people who live in states where the '94 AWB regulations are still in place (i.e. NY, NJ, CA etc).  MAKs are good to own in those states because the May '94 import cut-off is pretty solid proof that the rifle isn't subject to the '94 AWB regulations.  They are OK to mod with evil features.

Sounds like you probably have a pretty typical MAK there.  But yah, pics would help.

My main question is about the missing importer's mark.  Why can't I find it and where should it be?

Could it be under the wood?

hmm...they are stamped in different locations depending on who imported them but usually the stamp is near one of the locations you have pictured.  Left side of reciever, either forward or rearward.  I've seen a few stamped on the underside of the reciever just forward of the mag well.

Anything under here?

My MAK 90 is stamped above the pistol grip of the stock.

That looks to be a very nice example -
If you can pick it up yourself for a good price, you should.

The area above the grip and in front of the mag well is clean as a whistle.  I suppose the markings could have been ground off and the receiver refinished, but I can't imagine why anyone would bother.

For an AK, the gun is very nicely finished.

I won't buy it myself.  I have a Krebs, a Yugo and a WASR, so I already have the low, medium and high covered.

My only concern is getting my friend a good value.

Thanks for all the assistance.
