Is there an ACE side-folder that I can use on a Norinco 56S that came with a fixed stock and NOT have to modify the rear tang?  I'd like to be able to put it back in it's original configuration if need be.

Sure. Their standard AK adapter. It slides in and is secure by the tang screws. Just makes you stock longer. Get the short AK stock from ACE.

You can also get the "cut the tang" version and mill out the area on the block where the tang would sit.  I have seen this done and it works nicely.

The no cut version is ugly and long.

I agree about the no cut version being ugly and long.

Can I remove the entire tanged portion from the rear of the receiver and replace it with another part, saving the original part for future reinstallation?  Not that I plan to ever put it back, but I'd like to retain that option.

In theory yes, but it would be MUCH easier to just mill out the ace internal block.

your proposed method involves drilling out rivets and then putting new ones in.  If you are worried about decreasing value then this would do it just as much as cutting off the tang.

I'm facing the same dilemma as the OP.  I believe I would like the Ace folder for a planned project on one of my MAK 90s but, I really like the "Cut the tang" block better, but hate to cut the tang off of this rifle in case I decide to change configurations later.

I'm not opposed to doing some milling to the Ace parts but I'm having a hard time envisioning how this works.  I don't have the parts in front of me but from the pics I've seen it appears that the "cut the tang" block sits pretty much flush with the rear of the receiver which would make the tang interfere with the hinge mechanism.

Does anyone have pictures of this?

I will find it for you...

So I found the pictures but had a "Duh" moment.

Milling out the ace internal block to allow the tang to stay on is completely do-able BUT the folding mechanism will not work unless mounted very low on the block.  I can tell you from experiance that mounting it low is uncomfortable and looks unnatural.

That being said pics are in this AKforum thread

I will say this though.  If you want to do this, just cut off the tang.  Doing this on a preban Chicom will bring the value down, but is your rifle an investmant or a shooter?

Putting a new rear trunnion in is pretty damn easy if you have someone with a press or rivet tool.  Locating a Chinese rear trunnion would prove more difficult but not impossible.

Ok, thanks for the reply and info.  I didn't know that the mechanism would mount low enough on the block to clear the tang.  I don't think this solution is for me so I'll shelve the Ace folder idea, at least for this rifle.  If I find another, cheap, I may consider cutting the tang and going with that set-up on it.
