I own a milled receiver MAK90 with a thumbhole stock.  I want to make it more authenthic AK in looks.  Can I add a byonet lug to this gun?  What other changes will I have to make to remove the stock and put something better on it?

just comply with 922(r); this usually involves replacing the trigger/hammer/springs and furniture.

Congratulations on a fine firearm choice!

Should look almost like this. Just not as red as mine.

You'll have to press the gas block off if you want to replace the bayonet lug.  It's a PITA but not impossible.  If you don't want to refinish the barrel, you probably won't want to press off the gas block.

I'm currently in the process of de-banning an NHM-90.  It would be great to have a Chicom pig sticker on it, but compared to all the other work you can do to de-ban an AK, the bayonet lug is the most work.  I'm leaving it well enough alone for now.

One more question; Does the factory designation 386 make it a Poly-Tech?

No - unless it's stamped PolyTech on the weapon.  I have the same rifle that you do, and it's stamped 386.  Between the mag well and lower hand guard there is a Norinco stamp. You may or may not have that, there are so many variations of these rifles I don't know how anyone keeps up with it.

A true polytech will have the spring loaded firing pin. I have had several poly's over the years and they all had this feature.

Four ways you can add a bayonet. First, you can change the gas block for one with a lug and use the type 2 and 3 bayonets. To do this, you have to press off both the front sight and original gas block, although I am not sure if an AK-47 gas block (not an AKM) ever had a lug. Option two is to find an original bayonet front sight assembly. You would then have to press off the current front sight and install the new front sight with the attached bayonet. Good luck finding an original Chinese front sight with a bayonet and, if you do, be prepared to pay at least $200. Option three is to install a front sight block with "ears" and use a type 1 bayonet. I am not sure, but I believe a Bulgarian AK-47 FSB will work. Option four is to add a Chinese clamp-on folding bayonet designed for this application. Takes about two minutes and you remove nothing.
Looks like this when you're done and it costs $55 for the whole thing. You can't use a slant brake though.

As someone else has already mentioned the rest of your conversion will require you to comply with 922r, which means no more than ten foreign parts in the gun. If you have a threaded muzzle, that means 5 US parts must be in the gun. If you don't have threads, then 4 US parts. If you have a seperate trunnion, add one part to each count. You can then mix and match with readily available US-made compliance parts to make up the total you need. The most available parts are:
1. Fire control assembly - hammer, trigger, sear (3 parts)
2. Gas piston (1 part)
3. Magazine (3 parts - no kidding)
4. Furniture - buttstock, pistol grip, gas tube cover and front grip (only count as 3 parts)

Love the clamp on bayo!  Sure beats messing around with the gas block.

Keep in  mind you still have to remove the rear front sight pin and replace it with a longer one. The clamp-on bayonet has a shroud that covers the rear pin hole, so you remove the old pin, slip on the bayonet, and run a longer pin through the shroud and sight. Basically, the front sight is sandwiched between the bayonet shroud. You then clamp the bottom of the bayonet assembly to the top (that has the shroud). Very easy to do and it makes it very sturdy. I also replaced the allen head bolts that came with the bayonet with a different set (allen head pan style) and ground off excess threads so they would be flush. I'll see if I can get a closeup.

Where can I find stock replacements?  I have looked around some and the milled receiver, slant cut I understand instead of flat, is making it hard.
