I have a friend who has had a SA-85M for a long time. He got it with a wooden thumbhole stock and a tall scope rail welded to the dust cover.
1) Where is a good place to get a "normal" dust cover. This scope mount is too tall and the dust cover too wobbly to trust. 2) Where is a good place to get a pistol grip and stock. 2b) Is it possible to get matching wood to what it has (some honey colored wood). 2c) If I do #2 will he have to replace a bunch of other parts to maintain 922r compliance? If so, what is a good kit to get? 3) How can I tell if this AK can take the side mounted scope mounts? I know almost nothing about AK's except how to shoot them. |

When doing your 922r compliance parts keep this in mind. That ak most likely has single hook trigger. So if you put double hook trigger in you'll have to machine the reciever slightly by addling another trigger slot. Also, alot of those ak's came with the short gas piston. Again, if that's gonna be one of your compliance parts you're gonna run into an issue as most U.S. made pistons are the standard size.
These are issues i ran into and dealt with when i converted one of these several years back. As far as the matching wood furniture. I put a east german side folder on mine when i did it. Good luck Stone |

You can usually find them on Gunbroker. Here's one with a recoil spring assembly. Cover Buttstock - look on our Equipment Exchange - you might get lucky. Also, the Bulgarian blonde wood stock works fine. You can find original pistol grips on GB and the EE. If you put a pistol grip on it, you'll then have to meet 922r. Get the Tapco G-2 three-piece trigger set (single hook). Forget the side-mounted scope - it would have to be riveted on, and the SA85M receiver is too valuable to screw up. Stock replacement: expect to do some fitting. Most new stocks are made big so you can sand the tenon down and fit it to your receiver. A new stock will also not have the screw holes drilled - you do this after final fitting. Your 922r sheet would then look like this: Receiver - imported (1) Barrel - imported (2) Mounting block - imported (3) Muzzle attachment - none Bolt - imported (4) Bolt carrier - imported (5) Gas piston - imported (6) Trigger - USA Hammer - USA Disconnector - USA Buttstock - imported (7) Pistol Grip - imported (8) Forearm - imported (9) Magazine body - imported (10) Magazine follower - USA Magazine baseplate - USA Or, All-USA magazine You cannot have more than 10 of the listed parts imported to make a gun that otherwise would not be importable. You probably can do everything for around $125. |
