Hi guys,

New to the forum, just got my first AK yesterday at a gun store here in town in Texas.  The guy said it is a FEG SA 85M, a Hungarian AK.  I field stripped it and it looks nice and clean and in really good condition with all matching serial numbers.  Serial numbers are GB XXXX.

However, when I lifted up the hammer, I noticed a stamp that says "Replica Firearm Made in USA" on the inside of the receiver.  Has anyone seen that before? Just curious, did I just get ripped off?  Or is this something that is common on AK's?  Also, aside from the stamp on the side that says SA 85M, how else can I tell it's actually a FEG SA 85M, Made in Hungary?

Thanks very much,
Jason

Lots of floaters around building stuff like that. I last heard of Replica Firearms when they built up a pretty good AK-55 which included the side sling swivel using which I believe was a Bulgarian or Firing Line milled receiver.

Most likely this is a kit built from a FEG receiver which doesn't diminish the value any further than anything that is Hungarian made.

It is a FEG receiver, it is a FEG made kit.

May I ask how much you paid for it?

If the gun shop is representing it is a pre-1989 ban Hungarian Kassnar SA-85m, that my friend is not one of them, or a post ban KBI...not one of them either.

Sure, I paid 550 for it.  Seemed like a decent deal, this place isn't known for the best deals, but its clean and has matching parts and it was the only place in town that had something besides a WASR.  :-)

So if it says "FEG" on it, then it definitely is a FEG .. that's good to know.  Thanks for the reply.

you got a good deal....that is practically  steal...there are people paying 700-800 for a post ban FEG AK....

prebans are almost 1200-1500....maybe less if you are lucky.

You got a SA85 rifle made on a Hungarian made receiver, good deal.

@yetanothermike

Yes!  That is exactly what it looks like, where did you get that?  Is there a company that is re-manufacturing these stamped receivers?

I used to work for a company that did photo-chemical machining.  As a side project I etched the FEG markings into some of the older style Nodak receiver flats.  I added that "made in the USA" icon so there would be no confusion between this an a real FEG.  I sold a few on Gunco.net several years ago.....that is probably where this one came from.

If you want to rebuild it with a factory receiver I believe that Orion can engrave the design.

Well, there you have it - a replica receiver just like it says. I'd say it is not worth $550.

This is a great rifle.  I personally do not care about the collectible value of these so if you are happy with the way it shoots, I would say you
got a pretty good buy.  Certainly have seen them go for a significantly higher price.  I have a post ban model of this same rifle which I have
used a lot. Changed it up quite a bit but I want it to function like a modern battle rifle and I like the optic sights better than the stock irons.
