I have a small windfall coming up that should be around the $1,000 range. I am interested in an AK. I'd like the original flavor of 7.62 x 39 but I have no real knowledge of what to look for as far as country of origin, etc. Also, common problems as far as functionality to watch for when selecting my new toy of doom. I do not want a safe queen! I'm looking for a good, reliable shooter that does not have to be pretty but it does have to not be flat out nasty and rotted. I need the AK hive mind to let me in on some tips please! |

With $1000 you can't go wrong getting yourself an Arsenal SAM-7 Carbine, a few 12 packs of AK mags from sportsmans guide, and the rest in ammo. You'll have a milled receiver AK that's great quality, durable, and will hold it's value since arsenal has stopped making them for a while... hence limited numbers available. Just my opinion and what I'd do with $1000. YMMV. CMS |

Okay, I'll put that on the list of possibles. I just called a dealer in town and he has a vector arms for $599.99 with all wood furniture and one for $699.99 with an underfolder. What's the skinny on vector arms? Of course he's trying to sell them so they're a great deal in his opinion. Maybe they are, but since nobody here has a dog in the fight, I'm looking for an opinion from you guys on them. |
If you're looking for a Vector check Atlantic Firearms. They have the full stocked version for $499 and the underfolder for $589 They offer a discount to ARFCOM members so the underfolder comes to like $559 ish. Contact them and get some prices. You'll save almost $100 if you go for the underfolder. I don't have one (yet) but the Vector underfolder seems to be a good value and well liked. Hope this helps you save some money. Let us know if you have any more questions or if you pick up an AK. Be sure to post pics! CMS |

Also, when looking for an AK check for: -Canted front sight -Canted gas block...this you can check by removing the top cover and look where the bolt carrier and gas piston go into the gas block/gas tube. It should be pretty centered...not rubbing against either side of the gas block. You'll also notice the grove on the rear sight pointing to the left or right .... It should point pretty closesly to the front sight post. -Mag wobble/tight mag well...too tight is better than too loose since you could always dremel or file the mag well out a little bit. -Bad bore...only really an issue on the yugo's without chrome lined bores. -Trigger slap...can be fixed by putting a G2 trigger group in if necessary. -Bad rivets...only really a problem unless it is really poorly done. -Trigger guard/mag release riveted on crooked...will also cause the pistol grip to be canted to the left or right. That's all I can think of for now...if anyone wants to add anything else I missed go ahead. Hopefully this help Soylent out... |

Awesome info! I know it's $100 more, but once shipping and FFL transfer is set up I think the price will work out to pretty much same-same. I'm really tilting towards the local guy as I can go to the store and lick/fondle/examine the rifle prior to purchase. I just called them again and I'm told they have the synth furniture models coming in next week and its the same price. I know folks will stone me for saying I want that This is gonna be a utilitarian rifle. Low maintenance, low cleaning (unless it's corrosive ammo) low worry. I have an SKS that I bought at a garage sale about 15 yrs. ago and it is an ugly dog from china. However it just keeps on shooting and shooting and shooting...and that kinda gives me a chubber. One thing about it though, the wood furniture really hasn't aged well. I've cooked off most of the varnish on the forestock from barrel heating and it has alot of scratches and dings both from previous owners and myself. It's nearly to the point in a couple spots I'm worrying about getting a sliver, so the AK will be a synth unit. |
Shipping is around $25.00. A transfer fee usually runs around $20.00-$50.00, depending on the dealer. Shop around. Remember, no sales tax if ordered from out of state as well. Check the EE often. Good deals there. Arsenal Inc., would be my first choice. Of course, it all depends on what you want. Bud |

First thing, I want to thank everyone for the advice. Especially all the info from off thread from CZ. However, an opportunity came out of nowhere today and instead of an AK I bought an old boys entire collection of rifles and pistols 14 firearms (almost all the rifles have nice leupold scopes), a browning hi-power a couple .357's a neat little walter P22, the safe, the cases, the holsters, a closet full of ammo and magazines for all the guns and some reloading stuff for a little .410 double barrel. How could I pass this up?! I figure on keeping the pick of the litter, cutting my brother in on the rifles he wants and selling off the rest....maybe...unless I become too attached to them. I will get my AK another day though but it looks like it's going on the back burner for now. |
