| I am between the SSR and a Vector Classic. It will be my only AK for a while so I need one that can be modded. What folding stocks can go on the SSR? And is it a accurate AK? |
Are you sure it won't???? Nobody can be sure of everything on this site. I don't have your particular rifle, but I have been able to get them to work on SAR-1's, SAR-2's, MAK-90 and an SLR-105. That is a drop in stock. It may need some minor filing to fit into the rear of your receiver. If you are expecting to put an underfolder or a Russian/Bulgarian sidefolding stock on your fixed stock rifle with an extra thick receiver then there will be some major mods that someone will have to do. The stock I posted is a simple install and if you don't like it you can sell the stock. I've sold 3 of them and they don't stay on the EE long. If you want a fairly easy sidefolder that is probably much better but 3X's the cost and will require you to cut the tang which is only reversible by installing a new tang then go with the side folder from ACE. They may also have one that does not require the tang to be cut. It would lengthen your pull but it should work better then the Romanian sidefolder. www.riflestocks.com/AKStampedNoMods.htm ![]() There is also a way to mount the stock with an internal receiver block I believe. They have stock mounting systems which are made for 1mm or 1.5mm receivers. You will have to determine the inside dimension of your receiver at the rear where the stock is mounted. Call them and order the correct parts. Minor fitting maybe required. The stock can be mounted to fold either left or right, I believe. |
You do see that the mounting rivets at the rear are totally different then the stock mounting you have on your rifle now don't you? The stock can be obtained at Ohio Rapid fire, once again. For $179.00 plus shipping Or $139.00 with shipping from K-VAR You can also see in Creeper's picture that the receiver will need to be cut toward the front for the installation of a part. Take a look at his picture and then look at your rifle and you will see where rivets will be removed and the holes will need to be welded up for the mounting of the folding stock. Do you have the abilities to do this work yourself? If not, I would once again recommend that you contact a builder and get an estimate unless cost is not an issue with you. If cost is not an issue with you, then you can obtain a rifle built in that configuration already. Rifles in that configuration are available from Ohio Rapid Fire in 5.45x39 for $700.00. To retrofit your rifle in that configuration and refinish it will probably cost you: $450.00 for the cost of you rifle (low estimated cost) $139.00 (cost of stock plus shipping) $150.00 installation of side folder stock (est) $75.00 refinish rifle to match (low estimate) --- shipping to builder $815 minimum. Most likely more. Due to the fact that your rifle is built on what amounts to a Global Trades 1.6mm receiver which many builders charge a minumum of $50.00 additional to work on if they will even attempt to do the extra fitting of the part you are most likely looking at a price over $900.00. Now if you haven't already bought this rifle and I assume you haven't, then maybe you should research other options. If you don't have the rifle already then you are wasting everyone's time without doing any of the research yourself. This particular stock was designed for a 1mm receiver as far as I know. Anything can be modified to fit another rifle but it will take work, time and money. You might start by looking at some of the stamped Bulgarian rifles that may become available from Arsenal of NV You might want to check out Ted Marshall's website for pictures of his builds. You may want to take a look at the AK FAQ forum. You may think of contacting some of the builders listed in that forum or builders I gave you previously and consider having a rifle custom built in that configuration as it appears it would cost about the same for you to obtain parts and have the rifle built, instead of buying a rifle with the incorrect receiver and having it cobbled together. Are you over 18? |

Ace is the only one that makes a sidefolder that would fit the 1.6mm receiver. I have a box of Romy & EG folders none fit my SSR. The ace will add about 1 1/2 inches to the length to the stock, so if you like the short stock buy the shorter one. All the Russian & Bulgaria sidefolders fit the 1mm receiver. I don't beleive but could be wrong that the Russians make a 1.6mm unless it is a RPK. Ace also makes a sidefolder for milled receivers. The one that fits the 1.6mm is pretty cool fits right in. They are alittle pricey though, Hey it's only money. |
Actually mine's a 5.56 Bulgarian built from a kit available years ago from K-Var. Ted Marshall did the work but it wasn't cheap at all- the build fee alone was just over $1100 to install my parts kit and re-work of the pre-1989 reciever. Mak's numbers are accurate for prices though on just having an install for a folding stock and prices for stocks. Now there is a dfference between the Russian and Bulgarian sidefolders mainly doing with cutting the angle for the rear portion of the receiver. Installation is not a first time do it yourself project but finding someone to build once you have the rifle and parts shouldn't be a problem. FYI, I've heard now to many bad stories about the SSR85 C2 rifles so you might want to research more. Creeper ![]() |
That is true but my Bulgarian sidefolder was added onto a Chinese reciever which is I believe 2mm? Either way, the folding trunnion block can easily be shaved to fit give or take a few thousandths. I have installed EG and Polish sidefolder onto chinese guns which take a bit of fitting. I haven't tried the newer ACE style with the shorter pivot block but my general take on the older style was the machine screw and washer to hold place on the inside was not a good fit- even using locktight it heated up and back out. Basically do it right or just buy a Romanian SAR 1 and go from there. Creeper |

Just to be clear. Any prices I listed for modifications are based on estimates of average builders who may be able to do the modifications the poster wants done. A builder of Ted Marshall's caliber is going to be much more expensive if he would even take such a job on. As can be seen in Creeper's build, the rifle looks like an immaculate factory built gun. I've seen the pictures before and seen others mention that it was Creeper's rare .223 Bulgarian rifle so I assumed it was a rare import and not a Ted Marshall build. I talked to Ted Marshall several years ago and saw some Bulgarian rifles he had that he mentioned were one of a kind examples of rifles that were the only ones ever imported into the US. Obviously a Ted Marshall build is not something most of us are going to ever own. |
