Hey everyone,

I've been creeping around these boards for a couple of weeks now just trying to learn as much as I could about the AK. Today I finally got one for myself, SLR-101S. I just got a few questions about it since I was originally going into the gun shop for a SA M-7 Carbine. What changed my mind was I wanted the option of adding a scope if I ever wanted one in the future. The guy at the shop said I could add a scope to the Carbine but it would be flimsy. Is this true?

My SLR-101S doesn't look like the one on Arsenal's website. It doesn't have the thumbhole stock, takes double stack mags and came with a cleaning rod. Did Arsenal Inc. make some like the one I have?

Since this is my first AK, I'm not sure what all is involved and needed for this rifle. Anything I should pick up (IE front site adjustment tool) or be careful of? Thanks for you help and love the site!Edit: Just wanted to add that it looks just like the SLR-101 SB.

Welcome.
Nice AK to start with... I own the same rifle and love it.
Post a range report whenever you take it out, remember to take lots of ammo!

I have the same rifle. Go easy on cleaning, not the most durable finish. -Justin

welcome to the site, KaBar3!

I agree with a previous post....Nice first AR. Those are top-shelf versions of the modern AK.

I will pass along a bit of advice you may or may not want/take.

I found this site while researching my AK purchases a few years ago, and like an insidious disease set in (but a disease you are glad you have)

It spread like wild fire, and manifested itself into an AR/AK/FAL monster that sapped my money, my social life, and alienated me from my family.

So, KaBar3........................go forth, but with your fair warning!!

If it was a SAM7S instead of SAM7, it would have the sturdy side rail installed. You still did fine, and congrats!
Get a bundle of waffle mags, and a sampling of ammo to find the pet loads for your gun before stocking heavily.
If you need a windage adj, a C clamp and sockets can be used to drift the drum. An overnight lube soak and extra hands to hold the mess together while you set up the adj may help.
Shoot it a bunch and see how your habits evolve before deciding on a red dot or mag scope.

I usually use Hoppes #9 to clean my firearms with no problem. But would the kerosene in #9 take the finish off of my AK? I have some Hoppes Elite coming in the mail, should I wait to clean it with that instead? Thanks for the help.

Edit: thanks everyone for you advice. Maybe if I start taking antibiotics, I won't fall victim to this diease... I believe it is already too late.

Back to one of my questions. My SLR 101S can take double stack mags but Arsenal's website says it doesn't. Did Arsenal make some SLR 101S' that will take double stack mags? I also don't have the thumbhole stock. The dealer told me this is how he recieved it from the factory.

Your rifle was modified by Arsenal Inc. to take the standard military magazines, and at the same time modified to take the standard AK stock set.

Great first AK.

The finish is a baked on black enamel done in Bulgaria, and it is not as durable as the stuff on the SA-M series.  Don't let a solvent sit on the finish, just clean it and wipe it off.

Welcome to the DARKSIDE.
