| First off I should let you know I'm more of an AR platform guy, and am building an AR for the "tactical" role, which I consider a comfortable free float rail with flashlight up front, and an aim point type red dot and sling, and buis. I recently obtained an original condition SLR -95 with milled receiver not pre slotted for a lower tang. I love the ironwood designs furniture and had planned on getting a set to convert the arsenal. My question is, is there a way to mount an aim point on the dust over or elsewhere while keeping the traditional wood ak look? |

No problem my man. Enjoy that SLR-95, its a beast and one of the better AK's out there. I have one too but mine is more on the modern "tactical" side of things as its my only rifle. Just make sure you put (5) US parts on it to meet compliance. Not sure if its already been converted or if its still in its 100% imported bulgarian form. You will want a US handguard set (1 part), pistol grip (1 part), stock (1 part) and you can get away with (3) in the trigger if you do a tapco g2 dbl hook trigger kit (great trigger) which would total your 5 parts. You can replace any of the said parts with a US muzzle brake but the SLR 95 has a pinned / pressed break that is a PITA to remove and the barrel under is not threaded so you would need that done as well

I'll throw in that when installing an AK side mount, you want to spend some real effort in getting it properly aligned.
Too many people have botched the job and got it tilted one way or another and found out they didn't have enough adjustment in a sight to correct. Due to the fact you're drilling holes in a milled receiver, you only get one cut at this. Also, it needs to be well-riveted to prevent any looseness, or any change of developing any looseness later. I've seen at least one AK on the range where the owner was complaining about the scope not holding zero. I checked and you could rock the mount back and forth due to a bad rivet job loosening up. |
