Been reading in this forum for a while but this is my first post. I just picked up an Arsenal SLR101S from a friend of mine yesterday. I saw a post about this gun and had a few questions.

It has a magazine that is not a single stack feeder. The receiver says bulgarian made, so I assume it was milled there before it was imported (correct me if I'm wrong.) There are various parts all over the gun such as the buttstock, handguards, and pistol grip that are all labelled US ( so again, I assume they were added by Arsenal Las Vegas in U.S.).

I read on Arsenal Website that it was a "ban Style". Please forgive my ignorance but what does that mean? Does it mean that there are certain features on this gun that have been banned or does it mean that this gun was produced to be sold to avoid certain features that had been banned at the time? What exactly are the ban features/ rules?

The gun is very clean and in great condition. So I got the gun, Russian made Scope that lights up, five 30 round mags, and 100 rounds of ammo for $750.00. Is that a good deal or did I get raked over the coals? I bought it thinking that that is a good price for a milled reciever, but does all this ban stuff detract from the value?

One other thing, I took the gun to the local range today and I was very impressed. I've been shooting my AR's for a while now but I really enjoyed shooting this gun. I always thought negatively towards AK's but I really am amazed with its performance and toughness.

Any info you have regarding this matter is appreciated. I won't get my feelings hurt if you think I got a bad deal, just let me hear your honest opinion about this gun if you have one.hanks!

ban style...basically, no bayonet lug, and probably not a threaded barrel. I'm sure someone else will come along and add anything I missed, but that should pretty much cover it. $750, I'd pay it for a milled Arsenal, especially with the scope, mags and ammo. You did say it takes hi-cap right? Is it an 101S or 101SB? Like this?  Link

Looks exactly like the SLR101SB but it has SLR 101S engraged on the barrell, so thats kind of confusing since Arsenal's website clearly states that the 101S is a single feeder magazine style. But mine takes high caps.

I would like to change out the Perm brake, add a bayonet lug. Would I/could I have to change out the barrell all together to accomplish this to return it to Pre-Ban form?

It says that the brake is pinned. Can it be unpinned and the existing barell then be threaded? and could the Bayonet lug then be added from there?

Or would I have to start with an all new barrel with those features already in place?

Thanks for your response

go to the build it yourself section. there is a post in there for builders in Dallas. If you get the parts, I'm sure someone there can help you get them on.

I just went through 10 pages of buiold it yourself forum and didn't find anything about Dallas. I even did a search and didnt come up with anything.\

Do you have a link to where you saw that thread about Dallas builders?

heres the deal, these are Bulgarian guns brought into the country thru Arsenal in Vegas. They were imported with single stack magwells and opened up to accept double stack by (likely) Arsenal...thats a  common procedure with the 101's. You can purchase a lower tang, a new gas block with cleaning rod retianer, new front sight base with cleanin rod ears and also have the gill  flash hider removed.  The FH can be taken off, the bbl threaded and then you can put either the muzzle nut or slant brake on it.

Once the conversion is completed and it looks like an AK should look like, you'll be very happy and  have a very accurate and well built gun that is steadily increasing in value.  I have some SLR95's and had In-Range do my conversions and upgrades. Having someone with the skills and tools to do it right is money well spent.

You can see pics of my AK's on this website, go there and take a lok at my 3 SLR's and you'll see about what your SHOULD look like when completed.  btw, the 95's have great Steyr bbl's but im not 100% sure on the 101's.

Steyr barrels are  cold hammer-forged by Steyr Austria for increased precision and durability. supposedly very very durable and accurate..may or may not be chrome lined, but its a plus to have a Steyr bbl, and im not just not sure the 101 does.

In Range  is a shop here in E TN thats got an outstanding reputation for building AK's, Krinks and any AK variant, Troy does great work, prices are reasonable and he has a bit of a waiting list for big jobs simply b/c his work is so good. He doesnt advertise b/c he doesnt need too, hes covered up in work just by word of mouth.

He can do anything that needs  done to any AK variant and several other type  weapons as well...i know all this b/c  hes done alot of work for me and i also help out in the shop occasionally...heres a link to check him out and to contact him if you need him.
