I heard an iteresting statement on another board, I won't say which one or who posted it. The SSR-85 is the Bulgarian equivalent to the Romanian WASR. That is to say the parts used on this rifle were not up to snuff or didn't pass QC for the mil. rifles so were used for civvy rifles. I asked the author to state his source for this info but have yet to hear anything. What say ye? |

This subject comes up now and then. The thread in the url below goes back a while, but the info there is from the guy who originally imported the rifles. The importer has changed, I cannot find anything to say that the manufacturing practices have changed. If someone else can, I'd like to see it. http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/showthread.php?t=247956 |
| I have two and they are both very well made. The finish sucks but parts wise they are great. They seem to get a lot of bad comments but I dont know if I have ever seen anyone who owns one make negative comments. It always seems to be the guy who says I heard or I think. I dont know if I would purchase one that went through the original importer because I dont like the idea of the tack welded brake but I have no regret in buy the TGI rifles. Its like anything else everyone has an opinion but not everyone knows what the hell they are talking about. Talk to ppl who own them not some guy who read something on some website that some other guy heard from some other guy on a forum. I actually know that the parts are well made. I have several AK's and the only thing that is not on point about them is the parker. The guy is the source. Problem with the net is any idiot has a voice. |

As I've pointed out several times before, I like mine. I recognize a couple of shortcomings with it (finish and lack of US FCG), but it's a nice AK. I've been hanging out on this side of arfcom for a few months now, and after reading a lot of posts, I have not seen one manufacturer who has not sent out a gun with some kind of problem. The custom builders are a different matter, talking more or less mass produced here. I'm sure if I had a muzzle brake fly off, or got a rusty gas tube, I'd be pissed too. Owners of the later rifles don't seem to be having these issues, unfortunately it's nearly impossible when ordering from an outfit on the web whether you're getting old stock or new. The better retailers out there are willing to take care of it. Whatever hits the internet, stays on the internet, forever and ever. There's always someone who has an opinion, all a guy can do is try to decide who's in the know and who's full of shit. I saw a guy who is regarded as one the internet gurus on the subject of AK rifles (and he may be, what do I know?) tell somebody on another board he thought an SSR would be a decent choice, and then bash the SSR later in the same thread. Most of the advice I'd seen from him looked solid, and I still generally regard his word as good, but take it with a grain of salt as I would with anyone else. Sorry for the rant. |
