Not much traffic in here...

Today at the range, my SAR 3 ripped a spent (new, factory loaded) XM193 case in half, leaving a broken shell in the chamber.  It was Lot 3, 10, or 11, I don't know which.  Had a bunch of all 3 in the box.

I don't know dick about an AK, except how to clean, load, or fire one, though I can build an AR from a parts bin.  I'm not totally clueless.

How deep in the kimchee am I?

Thanks in advance,
Tim

Assuming the case is still in there, broken shell extractors are sold.  Just cus it's my closest catalog, gunsnstuff.net #TL-SE $5.69

Should be found anywhere you get your AR stuff,a s it is 5.56 specific and not AK unique.

And feel free to try the cheap commie ammo. There is only a 1/2" difference in my AR groups, and the chromed AK will enjoy the rough treatment.

RS39,

Thanks for the help.  I have seen the BSE's advertised, but have been too ignorant to include one ($5)  in any of my orders from various suppliers.  I've never used, or had any exposure to them, save for advertisements.

Yes, about half of the case is still stuck in the chamber.  I'm thinking that the BSE would pull it out.  I'm mainly concerned with the access to the breech while using the BSE.

Some questions, if you guys will play along...

Why did this happen?

Is the BSE "Plug & Play"? (Feed it into an assembled rifle, cycle the bolt, extract it, and the broken case..  done deal?) Seems too easy.

How far do I need to disassemble the SAR3 to use the BSE?

Is gunstuff.net an offshoot of SGN?  I have subscribed to SGN for a couple of years.  Just last week, I got a Guns-N-Stuff circular for the first time.  Build your own 98 sporter, by Reid Coffield.  Lots of the same advertisers.

Thanks!
Tim

Their need has only been internet rumor to me :)

You should only need to pull the carrier assembly to gain access. I ASSume here.

Why? Mayeb one rare brass. But look at others when firing for signs of stretch. PureEnegry had a round of the same brand blow out the bottom of his Bushmaster bolt carrier at BFest last year.

My most recent FAC mailer looks like a SGN issue, but I am aware of no actual business connection.

The BSE will need to be chambered just like a real round.  The tip of the BSE will protrude pass the neck opening of the seperated case and grab the case there and lock.  Operate the charging handle and see if you can't pull the extractor and case out of the chamber.  If the case is really stuck, you may have to bounce the butt of the carbine off a firm surface or apply your boot waffle to the charging handle.  I bet that it was just a simple case failure and that it will come out rather easy though.  Good luck!
