OK, so I am working on / looking dumbly at my sick SAR 2, and I take the bolt assembly out, and I don't have "ANY" woble or play between my gas piston and bolt carrier.

How the hell does a Kalishnikov (Romanian) bolt carrier disassemble?  The carrier appears to be one solid mass of machining and a gas piston threaded into it.

There is a cut out on the side of the carrier where the piston threads in, and I can see threads in this cut out, but the piston WILL NOT budge?!!  There doesn't appear to be a pin or anything keeping the piston captive.

The DARK SIDE isn't much fun when the Weapon NO WORKY....

'why' doesn't the weapon work? is the gas piston bent or installed crooked or rubbing the gas block? if so, simply put the carrier in a padded vise and bend the piston in the desired direction.

your sar-2's piston is threaded into the carrier and then welded in place.

to remove, sand off the paint to locate the welds. usually there are two (located 180° apart), but in this case there may be only one (since you said you could see threads. i'm guessing the threads may be visible thru the missing cross pin hole on the opposite side of the carrier.

once the weld is ground away, the piston will unscrew.

after removing the weld, a cross pin must be inserted to keep the piston fron unscrewing.

see the complete instructions for doing this operation on the redstararms website.

CAMPY- I wish I kenw what it was, then I would fix it!

For more details, see the other topic in this section.

Thanks for the info on the bolt carrier & gas piston, I don't believe that is the cause of my problems....

When you cut three inches off the end of your barrel, you dropped yout impluse duration.  The gas port may need to be enlarged to restore cycling.

I would ask a pro a recommended port size and drill it out to that size.  You don't want to over drill it.

Hoe much distance is there between your gas port and the muzzle end of the barrel under your brake?

HEAVYMETAL-  I have 1.4 inches from the crown of the barrel to the gas port.

I have heard that AK's are already over gassed to begin with though, but, I will seek a PRO's guidance about port diameter.

I tweaked the gas piston and carrier and got 3-4 rounds off between jams, so that leads me back to the carrier....

 Thanks for your time!
