I met this guy at a post-Christmas dinner this evening with my family. Talk turned to firearms (obviously) and he asked me if I knew anyone who worked on AK variants, as he was having major problems. I asked about his problem and tried to get as much information as possible. Details are sketchy, but here they are. He bought a thumbhole-stocked 7.62 AK in the late nineties, unsure of country of origin. He was shooting some sort of surplus ammo that came in battlepacks. The rifled has fired flawlessly for many rounds until one day recently. The shell case expanded and stuck in the chamber. He said that the firing pin was stuck in the rear of the spent case and pulled completely out(?). He said that he tried to force the case out of the chamber by running a rod down the barrel from the muzzle end to no avail. He said it was like the case was welded in the chamber. So what exactly happened and what should he do to rectify the situation? Thanks!

Did the case head separate from the case body?
Or did the failed extracion leave the whole case behind in the chamber?

If the rim is still there, use a .30 cal military rod, and tap (forcefully) out. If the rim is gone he/you need a broken shell extractor. Trust me I learned the hardway this is a must have item!

I'm unsure, but I believe that the case MAY have split apart including the head. What conditions could cause such situations to happen? Thanks, guys!

What could cause it?

Bad ammo or excessive headspace.

If it is a one time event, I would chalk it up to bad ammo as this is the usual cause (Rotdorn's experience notwithstanding).

Go to Tapco and get a 7.62x39 Broken Case extractor.

If it does it again, I would get the headspace checked.
