I own an Interarms AK-74 Poly, which I purchased from Atlantic Firearms. I received the AK with the front sight block canted to the right and the rear sight leaf angled to the left (the rear portion of the sight leaf is angled to the left as you look down the top of the rifle). 2 weeks ago, I sent the AK into Interarms to have both repaired. It was recently returned to me with the front sight block straightened, but the rear sight leaf appears to have the same problem. Although, it appears the leaf was replaced with a new one.
After close examination and more knowledge through research, I have come to realize that it's not the leaf that's the problem. It's the part of the front trunion where the leaf rests that is not perfect. Therefore, the leaf has very slight side to side play, where I'd be able to push it to the right to center it. Now that you have a good mental picture, I'd like to know two things: 1) is this common with AKs? and 2) can this be remedied, short of using a red dot sight? I'm training myself to strictly use iron sights for now, so a red dot is not an option at this time. One possible solution that doesn't really repair the problem, is to purchase and install a leaf that allows windage to be adjusted. Here's some pictures: Angled leaf http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx186/MrSumbody/100_0364-1.jpg http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx186/MrSumbody/100_0364.jpg http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx186/MrSumbody/100_0365.jpg Pushed right to straighten http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx186/MrSumbody/100_0368.jpg |

there are a number things that are at play here. The ramp portion of the rear sight block - are they parallel? The leaf itself - re the axle nubs of equal size and location? Hopefull, it is one of those two, because the next one is a nightmre to fix - is the internal clearance for the axle numbs on the RSB the same on the left and right? Often a small bur on the inside of this will let one side come up higher than the other, but getting at it to fix it is a pain.

| Hmmm... I sent it in to have both repaired, but it was returned to me with just the front sight repaired, as I stated in the post. Perhaps I can contact Atlantic, where I purchased it, and see if they'd do something. However, it was purchased in February of this year. |

Id pop it off and post pics of the side.... If you need on I have extras if you want one I can mail it... Butttt you want to make sure its the site and not the base...... Id take a pic of both sides and the top with the leaf removed.... While I appreciate your offer, I just cannot give out my address to someone whom I don't know. |

After close examination I am more confident the problem lies with the leaf. I've included some photos that might or might not help.

I think Mark is correct with this last statement , the two holes in the rear sight base where drilled off center or may have a bur and this is causing the leaf to sit in a angled position. You can take a small needle file/rat tail file ( sears, harbor freight ) to file the holes evenly. Use the leaf as a guide to figure out which hole is off. File a little then insert the leaf and check straightness ,repeat. |
