This is the same gun from my "Took a chance on a CAI Romy 74 - bang, bang, jam" thread.
anyway, I now need to change out the mag catch. Context : with the loaded mag inserted there is alot of play on the mag position and the rifle will jam. now- if I hold the mag rearward by hand it will cycle the whole mag. where can I get a new mag catch that will be longer than the one that I have now +1/8th to 1/4 " so that I can file it down to the perfect size. Also I would need a new ? Pivot / Rivet ????? - not sure of the proper name here. where can I get these parts, and any / all advice about the installation will be MOST appreciated. thanks guys! forrest |
| I'm dealing with the same issue on a Yugo. My gun operates fine but doesn't always hold the bolt open with BHO mags. If I hold the mag back it works properly. 1/16-1/8 is what I'm dealing with. The gun is all apart for maintenance and modification so I'd like to fix it. I'm thinking about cutting a piece of steel to fit and JB welding it in position. ? |

Perhaps the most practical way to lengthen the magazine catch is to have someone put a bead of weld on it so you can file it to fit. AK Builder sells the rivet that the catch pivots on, IIRC. Had the exact thing done to my m70 catch and its been trouble free ever since. I had to file some material off my tapco mags, but they fit fine. |
I have one 20 rnd Promag that fits great but my steel mags are just a little loose.

Done - in house today.
I bought a new E. german Mag catch w/ pivot pin from K-var. Drilled and punched out old pivot - compared the two mag catches / new one looked GTG for length - compressed the catch spring w/ visegrips and used part of a paperclip to "twist tie" the compressed spring - Installed assembly and held inplace w/ a smaller dia. punch from the bottom - Started the pivot pin and tapped it home while adjusting the alignment from the bottom with the punch - Checked function of mag, in out, in out, in out - cycled a whole mag through the rifle - Then used two BB's and a large pair of visegrips to finish the pivot install - GTG -
