I used to have an ar15 and when shooting wolf I would run into the problem of short stroking (it was related to an extractor spring issue believe it or not).
Now yesterday shooting my m70 for the first time I had a HELL of a time with short stroking causing my rifle to have double feeds or the rounds would just impact the feed ramp ( wolf mc fmj, wolf mc hp and brown bear hp) - the brown bear hp acutally performed better than the others. Also I can probably say most of the double feeds were caused by tapco mags, but I still had some short stroking issues with yugo & hungarian mags too. I shot 150 rounds through the rifle and have to ask, what can I do to improve this rifle? I actually polished up the tip of the feed ramp slightly (hard to get the dremel polishers in that tight spot), and the top of the rail where the bolt rides (top of the receiver). Now I am debating if I went too far and need to cold blue it. It seems like that parkerizing that Century does is on the ENTIRE rifle, on every surface like nothing is smooth. Maybe it just needed the polishing to accelerate the 'natural wearing'? |

I'm not an expert on this by any means, having diagnosed this problem on one Yugoslavian 59/66. In that case the gas valve was visibly corroded. I ran a gas port reamer in the port, which improved the function, but didn't make that rifle work 100%.
Hopefully someone else with more experience will post specific advice. If so, follow it. If not, remove the carrier and tube and shine a light into the GB. Check the condition of the valve. See if the gas port is unobstructed. Work the sight and see if the valve turns and both closes and fully opens the port. |
