I have a like new gun but it wants to short stroke? Any help?

Can you give us a more through description?

The gun will fire one round, eject and it fails to chamber the next round. I watched it and saw that the bolt did not come all the way back. I was thinking that maybe the recoil spring is too strong.

If it's a WASR-3, the more common problem is that too much was filed off the magazine catch when it was converted from low cap to high cap.  This means the magazine sits too low.  To verify that this is the problem load the magazine and cycle it by hand. First push the magazine as far up into the rifle as you can. Then pull it as far down as you can.  If it feeds when the mag is pushed up but not when pulled down, you'll need to replace the magazine catch.

I hand cycled the gun and it functioned perfectly. I believe that the bolt is not coming back all of the way.

What are you using for a magazine?

What kind of ammo are you using?  Some types are known to be on the weak side, such as black box Wolf.  If the rifle has a 5.56 chamber, I'd try some XM193.

Have you lubricated the rifle?

Did you clean the rifle when you got it?  It's possible there is debris clogging the gas port.

I am using the metal mag that was shipped with the gun I think.
There is a generous amount of lubrication on the gun. One guy suggested that the gas block might be misaligned. Please look at the picture and let me know what you think. If it is misaligned can I 'tap' it into place?

Looks OK.

How tight does you mag lock up in the gun?

Mag locks up tight. When I fire the gun the bolt does not come back far enough to eject most of the rounds. I have seen the same problem with AR's and a little work on the gas port does the trick. Is there anything like that available for the AK's?

I doubt it is the gas port as AK's tend to be way overgassed.

The absolute last thing you want to do is drill the gas port.

Could be the crap-actular century piston.

Are you near Knoxville by any chance?  There a world class AK smith there.

Is there a recoil buffer on the gun?  If so, remove it.

I got it fixed. I removed the gas block, and cleaned out the gas port. Reinstalled the gas block and she is running great!

Was it clogged with something? Carbon or jacket fouling?

Remove the two pins holding it on with a hammer and punch.  Be sure to support the barrel when you do this.  It also wouldn't be a bad idea so saturate the block and pins with a good penetrating oil like Kroil before starting.

Or you could just use that little punch looking tool that comes with the cleaning kit. They call is a gas port scraping tool.
