In 450 rds it malfunctioned 4 times.

2 times with the same mag I had failures to feed. The empty case was properly ejected, but the round that was to be loaded next "stove piped"

I figured it was a bad mag and set it to the side.

The other 2 malfunctions were with the same mag(different than first mag) also. One malfunction was the follower did not push the round up high enough for the the bolt to strip the shell. The second was a faliure to completely eject the empty case.

Ammo used was Wolf poly case. You know the gray stuff. Does this ammo have a reputation for poor reliability? How about SAR-1?

This is not the first time this rifle has malfunctioned. Ive had about half dozen failures to eject before.

What kind of mags were they?

My SAR-1, WASR-10, and Romak 991 have never had a stoppage. and I never clean them.

I don't know what's wrong with yours but it's not normal.

I was having the same type of problem with my wasr 2. It felt really hitchy when I would work the action. I took a little metal off of the hammer, and then polished it. Haven't had any problems since then.

i have an Sar-1 that i have put about 3,000 rounds through so far and have only cleaned a couple of times and i have never had any problems functioning with any of my 6 mags so i agree there must be something wrong with ur gun.

It could be bad mags, maybe the early version Pro-Mags or some other junky USA made mag.

I believe they are hungarian steel mags.

ETA they may be polish Ive had them for several years and forget exactly what country they are from.

I believe that was the problem when I had the round not push far enough for the bolt to catch it. Honestly I never cleaned any of the mags. Just unwrapped them from the grease paper and made sure none of them had any major dents

It still has the origianal Fire control group. Is it common for these to cause problems?

Has the rifle been properly lubed?

I can't count the number of times I have seen peoples firearms being shot absolutely absent of proper lubrication.

Not saying this is the case with yours.

FMJ or HP Woof ammo? Sounds like the classic woof HP malfunction.
If hollow point, try some full metal jacket.
