WASR 10 - all 11 magazines (Chinese, Yugo Bolt Hold Open, Bulgarian Waffle, no name junk mags- Wolf Military Classic HP - intermittent Failure to Chamber: The bullet nose impacts between the chamber and the "feed ramp"? The tip of the bullet (HP) ends up slightly deformed. Tapping the bottom of the magazine and working the operating rod sometimes caused the cartridge to chamber. I ran two AZoom snap caps through all the magazines. I had one failure to chamber because the bullet nose became deformed from contacting the feed ramp before chambering. This caused me to wonder if switching to FMJ rounds would help or is the problem in the magazine well? The magazine release holds the mags securely in a very slightly up position. I have shot these rounds through my Lancaster Consulting AKM and only had a Failure To Chamber with one of the Bulgarian Waffle Magazines. Does anyone have any ideas?

I would think since you tried a variety of mags and are getting somewhat the same results you most likely ruled out mag issue.  Does this happen when you fire or only when charging the rifle?   If it's a charging issue only then make sure you are not walking the bolt back in.  Let her fly.   I would also check the rails for any burrs that might cause it to hang up just a bit when charging.  More than likely though the mag catch was filed down a bit too far, and it's seating just a tad too low.   That problem is very prevalent with the wasr 3.  Most from what I see send it back to century to fix.   The last option that you can do is use your dremmel and give just a tad of a feed ramp on the chamber.  A few threads with pics on how little you need to take off.  People do this to help feed hp's but it could be just exactly what you need.

Thanks for the help. The failure to chamber occurs when chambering the first round and when firing. I'll try to find the threads with photos on adjusting the feed ramp that you mentioned. I bought this from a private party so I guess it's mine to fix. Luckily, Salbo Arms is not far from here.

Follow Up:  I talked to Bobby at Salbo Arms and he thinks that that the magazine release might have the magazines sitting just a tad low in the mag well for shooting HP's. At his suggestion, I went to the range and shot 45 rounds of Golden Tiger FMJBT. No failures to chamber with this round. So, I will take this rifle as a back up to my Lancaster AKM when I report to Kalashnikov Rifle Gunfighting School in a couple of weeks. Bobby gets to look at it when I get back. If the magazine release is out of spec, I will have him replace it. I emailed the man from whom I purchased this rifle as to whether the magazine release had been filed down. I have yet to hear back from him. Some people still have to work a full-time job. Thanks again, funnymantrip!

Some reported failures to feed hollow points have been cured by slightly ramping the area where the bullet tip hits the chamber face.  There are pictures of how it is done somewhere. You don't want to overdo it though.
