Anybody know where to get an original looking AK-74 for a decent price (under $700) that isn't post ban like the SLR-105, (I know there is a pre-ban SLR-105 model but I can't find that and if I could I couldn't afford it)

If I can't find a good price/model I might settle with a Tantal, I want a 5.45 rifle because of the cost of ammo and because of the accessories that are flooding the market

5.45 is only here for a bit...dont buy a gun cause cheap ammo....

it comes...it goes...

.223 and .308 will be here forever in availability.

safe bets.

For the price of 1 case of .308 you can buy THREE plus cases of 5.45...

Spend $1,000 on 5.45 ammo and you will have in the neighborhood of 9,000 rounds.

I would sooner stack ammo in deep today than count on continued availability of "common" calibres in the future at any price you can afford.

I agree. Go buy ammo. Everyone buy ammo!

I should add... .22lr has seriously become my most popular calibre along with 9mm.  My G22 and my 94 are getting a workout because I can shoot .22 all day for $10 and a case of 9mm is still affordable compared to centrefire rifle cartridges.

11 tins 5.45 ammo
2 M44 rifles
1 "you fix em" No4mk1 Enfield

1 M44 is for a friend, and 1 tin is for another buddy.

so no...dont buy freakin 5.45 please...I need more!

You'll like the Tantal, shoots sweet. Ohio Rapid Fire sells AK-74s they produce using Bulgy parts on OOW receivers I believe, both straight wood stock & side folders, under $700. They are also nice to shoot.

dieter, .223 is going to go up in price way too far

I can still varmint hunt with 5.45, so ORF makes a good model?  Do they use Armory Receivers too?

.223 is going to be available forever, and in various forms.

5.45 options are limited....this is why I suggested a common NATO caliber.

ORF makes good 74s no doubt.  Not sure what receivers their using at the moment, it changes over time really.  New contracts/runs, etc.  Give ORF a ring and I am sure they will be more than happy to assist.  They are good people.

Thanks guys, but my point Dieter is that like you, I can stock up on this ammo by the thousands of rounds, and I wouldn't go through it all in a life time unless SHTF, but I can't do the same anymore for 7.62x39 or .223/5.56

i still think overall, for long term you would be better served by a 7.62x39 or .223 AK.

i cant stock up with enough that i wont shoot up through time....it goes fast!

+1
I would have to agree with that too. 7.62 is the gold standard of AKs and it still a round that can be had at many sporting goods stores. WalMart, Sports Authority, etc.

Wolf still makes 5.45, so it will be here a while, but right now I can buy this stuff by the tons for much cheaper than .223 in bulk, I have enough 7.62, why should I not get a 74 then?

Why do people keep saying this? It was available before the surplus hit the market and I see no reason it will be gone after the surplus is used up. If there is a market for it Wolf will import it, and I'm sure Privi would too as they make lots of calibers now.

nope I got two myself

I got two AKs in each cal... 7.62x39, 5.45 and .223/5.56.  Also got a PSL to feed (AK action still).

Sure Wolf may still make 5.45 but for what price??

"dont worry even if 54R doesnt come in, Wolf will make it!"  Sure...for 40-50 cents a pop.

ill buy milsurp, you can buy the commercial stuff   I cant afford commercial mfg 54R, 8mm, etc.  5.45 skyrocketed to like $300 a case some months ago when no milsurp was coming in, and when Wolf made 10000 excuses why none was coming into the country.  "Oh the waterways/docks are frozen and ships can pass through", or "the war effort".

wolf's 5.45x39 is actually cheaper than their 7.62x39 (atleast where I buy it from) which is locally and sportsman's guide. I've only managed to stockup a modest 4300 rounds (give or take) for my bulgy 74, but with 5.45x39 this cheep, I plan on stocking up a lifetime supply (10k+) If the ammo prices keep going up, even those "common" nato rounds are going to be to expensive to shoot recreationally.

so for you who have 74's, do you have WASR-2's or nice Bulgy kits or Tantals or what?  How do you like them, I mean I have 6 AK's in three calibers, .12guage, 7.62x39, and 7.62x54r, how is the 5.45x39, I think I remember dieter saying somewhere else that 5.45 was his favorite caliber to shoot...

I was just thinking the same thing, I just saw a video on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxqgOiq6Fz0  seems to me if you buy enough ammo now it will be a good investment for many years. Which is what I wanted to ask you guys, is Wolf AK74 ammo as reliable in it as the 47 ammo is in it ?? If it is, I think I know what I'm getting next..
