That link works ... sometimes the page will not display ... it's the AR15.com server's fault.
Before submitting I clicked on the link to make sure it would open the page ... and it did.
However, today, when I clicked on the link, page did not open.
Few seconds later I clicked the link again; page opened and I copied it.
Here's what you have posted:

First off, I have never ordered a custom built firearm…. So….
If you were initially told it would take “about a month” for a custom built Ak-47 and now it is going on 10 weeks would you be worried?

No real contact without initiating it yourself.
Is this normal?
Thanks in advance

Yes it seems to be the norm... and unacceptable IMO.

I waited 4 months to get a rifle back after a refinish job.

Now I just build and refinish myself.

I got one built and back in 9 days after dropping everything off at a professional builders shop. He called me with updates letting me know when the rifle was built and that finish was being applied.

Who is doing your build? There are some builders to stay away from.

10 weeks is nothing. I've waited over 6 months for a build.... and no, I'm not talking about jnewt.

Long waiting times for a build is what inspired me to learn how to build for myself.

"6 months" is relative. How long did the bulider state. I was told about one month. I also paid up front.

Not at all. I would be more concerned about a builder that didn't have a long wait. A good gunsmith / builder ought to be busy. If he's not it means something -- he's not good at what he does.

Now my question is-- why not build it yourself?

Regards,

If you don't mention who the builder is then a definitive answer can't be given. A 2-3 month build time for a well respected builder isn't out of line.

If it was Ted Marshall doing the build there would probably be a two year lead time before your rifle was even started. So it wouldn't be him.

If it was Diamond Dave and he gave you a certain time period and you don't get it back and start complaining you would probably receive a hack job back with a nasty note.

I wouldn't use a builder that wants all the money up front as that sounds too much like a Gary Gucciano type of hack.

The builder I used refused payment up front, finished the rifle ahead of time and built a great rifle. I paid him when I picked the rifle up 9 days later. I used PoHFs. Not that he is always going to give you a two week build time as it depends on how many builds he has lined up at the time.

If a builder has to rely on full payment up front then he is relying on advance payments to keep in business in my opinion and that is just asking for trouble. If he can't finish your rifle, he has probably spent the money and can't come up with the amount for a refund. A 50% down payment is more than fair for a builder in my opinion. If you can't come up with the other 50% at the completion of the rifle he can sell it.

Do you have the link (i.e. http://www.ar15.com/forums/......etc) to the actual thread so I can continue it and not have to start a new one?

That link is:

http://archive.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=64&t=94345

to find that link I used Archive search, which is available to team members only.

Once a thread is archived, I don't think you can reply to it anymore.
