New Guy with a question: I recently purchased the AKM 1.6mm Classic from Atlantic Firearms. Because of aging eyes, I have a hard time picking up the front sight. It falls just between the focus distances of my distance lens and handgun front sight lens (trifocal). I have read that Jim Fuller makes a replcement rear sight with a wider aperture but I don't see how that will help me pick up the front sight. I am looking at the Kobra optical sight as an alternative ($$) and see that is to be mounted to a side rail, which is conspicuously absent from my AKM's receiver. I have searched many web sites that specialize in AK optics and mounting systems and am very confused as to which side rail I would mount on my rifle to accommodate the Kobra. I have looked at the Ultimak sight which bolts to the gas tube  and am more confused about the relative advantages and disadvantages of one mounting system over the other. Any advice, suggestions, and/or constructive criticism would be appreciated.

I think I have posted these questions in the wrong place. Moderator, please move it if I did with my apologies.

Worfusa,
I bought a Vector fixed-stock rifle last October and decided I wanted to make it my tAKti-cool version so, of course, it had to have a Kobra optical sight on it.  But Vector doesn't sell an AK with an optics rail.  What to do?

I contacted Tantal at http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/ and ordered both the Kobra and a screw mount optics rail from him.  Since I don't have the tools to do it right, I took it to a local 'smith and had him put the mount on.

Absolutely wonderful.  I'm 54 and my eyes ain't what they used to be.  The Kobra has an "infinity" focus point so it doesn't matter whether I'm wearing my glasses or not, the sighting point (and I use the dot & chevron) is always in focus.  What a wonderful thing!  From a rest, I can hold less than 2" at 30 yards with a fairly rapid rate of fire (I would say 1/2 second or less per shot).  My buddies tell me they can tell if I'm shooting when they drive up to the indoor range due to the rate of fie.

Thanks for the input. I also emailed Atlantic Firearms. Here is their reply:

The Ultimak set up is the only item you can use , look at it closer it completely replaces the gas tube and there should not be any unbolting issues

Thank You

If I were you I would go with an Ultimak setup, rather than buying the optics rail and having it installed.  You could then get the Kobra with weaver mount or an Aimpoint/Aimpoint clone to put on the Ultimak.

Vector does sell rifles with the optics rail installed. I ordered one late last year for an extra $60 installed. The delivery time is a little longer (a few days). You only need to let them know exactly what you want.

Since you don't have a side rail check out this mount.

Jakevas, I wish I'd known that.  I would have been willing to wait to get one straight from Vector, and undoubtedly it would have save me some $$$$ as well.  Oh, well, lesson learned.  Regardless, I am very pleased with mine.

BTW, the Kobra comes off during transport to and from the range and I do NOT lose zero when I put it back on.  Or at least, if there is any change in POI, it's less than what I am capable of shooting.

Very cool. Does anyone have experience with this scope mount?

That is so high, I don't think the "chin weld" would be very comfortable.

The Ultimak is professional level equipment.
I've seen several pics of contractors in the sandbox with them on their AKs.

A cheaper route would be the dust cover with the built-in rail, but you probably get a small change in POI each time you remove the cover.

From what I've read, the Ultimak is well worth the money.

If you are using a red dot, I don't think it would matter. For anything with manification I think it would suck. I believe member on the Fal Files came up with this design.
