I'd say screw the gunshow and order directly from Atlanticfirearms.com.  They even give discount for arfcom members.

I'd highly recommend Vector classic or sidefolder in 7.62x39mm

Buy a Saiga .308 for around $330.00 with tax and do the conversion is my first choice.

Buy a SAR-1 for no more than $400.00 but check out linx310's site first so you know what to look for.  If you don't mind the caliber buy a SAR-2.

Don't buy a WASR as a first choice.  If you do buy one pay less than $330.00.

Buy a MAK-90 for no more than $350.00 to $400.00 tops

Hometown forum, range mooch and pay the guy's show entry to help you hand pick (esp if you go the Romy route).

John...stay away from the Gun shows....your going to pay about $450 for a WASR....these guys have gotten rediculous with what they are asking....I would pay $300 tops for something like that......save your money, for about $500 you can get a beautiful Vector arms AK that also comes with a 5 yr warranty and is made with polish parts....there AKs are about the best deal out there right now, and their workmanship and quality is TOPS.....go vector

Look for a Yugo underfolder, if you can get one w/o sights canted it is a heavy beefy underfolder. For a few bucks more get the Vector, nobody complains about them.

+1 Inspect as described above but the Yugo underfolders are nice!

Depends on what you are looking for. Standard stock AK-look for an SAR. $400
Underfolder-Yugo but check it out for canted(off centered) sights.
Best AK for the money-Mak 90 or NHM 90. Most have Bushhole stocks but can be converted to original designation. The Chinese are in my opinion, the best.

Buy a Vector AK for $499.  I got one and love it so much more than my cheap Romanian WASR-10!

Look at the EE, you might even be able to find one to buy ftf.  For that kind of money, you could get a really nice MAK 90.  You could also get a SAR 1, 2, or 3. along with mags, and maybe some ammo.  (make sure the front sight is straight)

A bunch of other types can be found in the price range as well.   Keep reading the forum, and take your time deciding.

Keep an eye out for a milled Bulagarian SLR95. I seen them at Gun Shows for $450 or less.

Post again when the WASR arrives and it has the associated problems involved because you weren't able to check it before buying.

We've all been a AK noob one day, and we know what CAI WASR is all about.  It's hit or miss.

Personally I despise Century quality

look for canted front sight base.

also, feel the trigger for slap

and lastly, make sure that mag will insert correctly.
