I would like to get an AK, but don't know what I should look for, or stay away from. The only thing I do know, is that I want a 7.62x39.

Could I get some tips/hints/advice about the good, the bad, and the ugly?

How much are you willing/able to spend ? MAK90 is a good low priced gun to start with . Don't know much about all the guns people are making now , that's why I'm here reading .

I think $300-400 might be a good price range for my first. The Romanian AK's that Classic Arms has looks like a good deal. What's the difference between the "standard" AK and the "Military Variant"?

Look for a SAR 1. Do yourself a favor and stay away from the WASR10.

I would say buy a Yugo (on a DCI receiver, not Century).  They're reasonably priced at around $450 which is good for a starter AK.  If you have some more cash, I would say spring for a Polish underfolder which is what I did.  Underfolders are the way to go!
