I have a Bulgarian SA-93 that I'd like to convert from Thumbhole to Pistol Grip
The Muzzle is currently bare
I believe I've read that 4 US parts are necessary
Is this True ?

I figure maybe an Ace STock and the Trigger Components

I am thinking of doing the same with my milled Mak-90 and using a stock set from here..

www.ironwooddesigns.com/2aprod/1zAKproduct.html

Not sure if you have milled reciever or not.. I think it is though..

If you do then it is 4 I think.. If not I think you need 5 and 6 if you add muzzle brake..

I was thinking US Made Gas Piston from Redstararms.. as part 4

I also want to put a muzzle brake on so looking at threading the barrel as well..so it will be 5 Parts..

I think this is right if not someone please let us know..

Yeah it's a Milled receiver

I belive it's 4 and 5 if you want to use a Foreign Muzzle device

I thought about Ironwood also but I've got my eye on some nice Polish Laminated Upper and Lower handguards

This is the response I received from Arsenal when I asked about how many parts go in to a SA M7 to make it compliant.

"The SA M7 is equipped with seven U.S. made parts: The receiver, hammer, disconnector, trigger, upper & lower handguards, pistol grip, & buttstock.   You need a minimum of five U. S. made parts in order to be 922r compliant."

Edit.  The SA M7 is a milled receiver.

Check out:
www.tapco.com/section922r.aspx

Figure a Wasr10 has the following US parts:
US Piston
US Trigger
US Hammer
US Sear
US Pistol Grip

You could do the same with your SA-93 and be legal. The hardest part (relatively speaking) would be changing the piston but by doing so you could use foreign made stocks.

Sure their are other combinations, like US mag parts, but I discredit those as being a crappy way to make an AK 922r compliant.

I immagine any attachment you have to the muzzle on there is permanent so I don't believe that would count in the equation. Look at the Muzzle nut on the Wasr10's.
If your muzzle attachment is not permanent you most likely would need a US one.

These are the countable parts, no more than 10 can be imported.

(1) Receiver
(2) Barrel
(3) Trunnion
(4) Muzzle attachments(flash hiders, brakes, barrel extensions, barrel nuts)
(5) Bolt
(6) Bolt carrier
(7) Gas piston
(8) Trigger
(9) Hammer
(10) Disconnecter
(11) Buttstock
(12) Pistol grip
(13) Forearm handguards
(14) Magazine body
(15) Follower
(16) Floorplate

I did a search under SA-93 because I just bought an Arsenal SA-93 today.  It also has the thumbhole stock, but it is so much nicer than the WASR10s or even the Yugos that I was looking at I had to have it.

Like yours Turnkey, the barrel is bare.  I haven't measured the barrel yet, but I would like to put an actual Brake on the barrel.  Flash hidder is one thing, I want a true brake for faster follow ups.  I think that you asked this earlier but I saw no response.  Can I have the barrel threaded so I can try one brake and then if I don't like that one, I can unscrew it and try another one?

If I don't get a response here, I could start another thread, but I thought that this question went very well with this thread that I found with the search function about the SA-93.

If your barrel did not have the threads turned off of it then it can be threaded for 14x1 LH attachments. If it has been turned down, you can probably have it threaded for 1/2-28 attachments but you will be limited in choice.

Remember that the muzzle device is a countable part and has to be US made unless you swap out something else to take its place.

To be legal:

Milled receiver with no muzzle attachment: 4 U.S. parts
Milled receiver with muzzle attachment: 5 U.S. parts

Stamped receiver with no muzzle attachment: 5 U.S. parts
Stamped receiver with muzzle attachment: 6 U.S. parts

On the milled receiver, there are no trunions so it requires one less U.S. part when either with or without muzzle attachment.

How can I tell if the threads have been turned off?  What diameter should the barrel be if I put my calipers to it and take a reading?

I know that this one is off of topic some, but since you guys know about the SA-93, can I convert this to a side folder with just a screwdriver?  I know to make it into an underfolder the rear tang has to be cut off and if I don't like the side folder I want to go back to a regular stock and don't want to loose that option.

If this has been discussed many times a pointer in the right direction would be wonderful.

It will be obvious. If you've ever seen a Romanian SAR w/o muzzle attachment, you'd notice immediately how thin the front of the barrel is compared to the rest.

It should be 95% or more equal to the thickness of the barrel below the gas block, for reference. If you have a "pencil" for a front end...it has been turned.

I think you might find at least four US parts in your SA-93 already. Maybe five even. There are in mine. Note that response about the SAM-7? Already in there in that case. Thats what I found in mine anyway. Probably best to take a peek.

And if you want to add a flash hider/brake threading just be sure to use a USA made brake to be safe.

And I think these stocks were not USA made either.

Were you the original owner of this rifle?  Did it come with a thumbhole stock?  What are the clues as to the parts being US if you are the original owner of the rifle.  Did you remove the FCG so that you could verify that it is a US part?  Have pictures of the parts showing what leads you to believe they are US?  Is the FCG milled or cast?  Is the piston chromed or staineless? If it is a milled FCG what markings are there? How about pictures of the end of the piston showing the grooves in the actual piston end.

Answered you on the other thread Mak. Cannot be certain now when they were added. So withdraw my conclusion that they were done on import. Check!
