This guy can't hit the paper @ 200m with open sights. Is the accuracy of the rifle really this bad? He's even on a bench. http://youtube.com/watch?v=G6BpI3xD6h0 |

i worked the range at our local club this fall for the pre-deer season sight in. it would amaze you at how many people can't hit a 50 yd target from a solid rest. one guy in particular was shooting a remy 742 woodsmaster (approx the same mechanical accuracy as the AK). his two closest bullet holes were 18" apart at 50 yds. his average group was about 2' (he ran out of ammo and had to go home....approx 80 rds). another guy with the same type rifle fired 3 shots at 100yds from a solid rest. he had a 13" group, and with a big shit eating grin packed up his rifle and said perfect...then went home. this was my first time working the range, i was dumb struck! advntrjnky ETA: i would bet that the rifles were at least capable of 2"-3" groups. |

i did not see it flex that much, the cleaning rod was all over though once at the range they had some guy setup right next to me with a 50BMG with the typical large, deafening muzzle brake. He was shooting at 100yrds at a 2ftx2ft target with a leupold scope. He barely made it onto paper with about 10 rounds, i was shooting better than him with an open sight AK

While out at a shooting course in Nevada they gave a quick course in foreign weapons we might encounter, including Moisin Nagant M-44's and AKs. Most of us are avid shooters, but a few had never shot anything outside the military. They were all excited about how accurate the M-44 was at hitting this drum out at a distance on the side of the mountain, that is until I hit the same target with the AK. A rifle is only as accurate as the abilities of the man firing it. |

The cleaning rod was definitely all over the place but the barrel seemed to flex noticeably as well. Leastways to my eyes anyhow. I figured not being able to hit the paper @ 200 on a target that size had to be BS. The video definitely portrays it as a problem with the rifle and not the shooter though. I love how the AK is primarily a "machine gun" based solely on the selector. lol |
It is BS. Total BS. I installed a bunch of 922r compliant parts in my MAK last week and then went to confirm zero. I was shooting 5" 10-shot groups at 100 yards with Wolf poly HP's. Putting every round into that target from the video at 200m would be entirely plausible. |

If you guys didn't notice, both those chaps were from Picatinny Arsenal. I don't think it's in their interest to make the AK47 look like a decent weapon. Whatever you call that act, the one inwhich his finger came in contact with the AK trigger, it's not right. IMHO they intentionally botched the comparison. Furthermore, I wouldn't mind seeing those same slow motion shots without the cleaning rod; I think alot of the percieved movement is an optical illusion with that cleaning rod all over the place. Where's my tinfoil hat? -Read |

For some reason I can't see the video, but from my own experience most AKs should be able to keep shots on a typical paper target at 200yards without too much trouble. A very worn Ak using very poor ammo might produce results that bad. The truth is that the AK does suffer from accuracy issues, but I don't believe those issues are to the extent that these guys seem to be talking about. AK barrels do indeed flex alot (on 7.62 rifles anyway), even on milled recievers barrel flex is typically high on AKs, of course I have never really seen a bull barrel AK, that might help the accuracy. I am not caling complete bullshit on the video, I could hear the audio and it sounded like they were at least familiar with good marksmanship techniques, but I am wondering what kind of rifle they were testing and what condition it was in. |

wow nice comparison video. if an AK is 5-6 MOA @100 yards, then at 200 yards, its entirely possible to miss the paper. unless u r an EXPERT w/the weapon or have optics. the penetration tests were awesome, I can't believe the AK went thru the 8" block of wood! I think its safe to assume an AK 7.62 will more likely go thru body armor than a .223. if a milled AK flexes dat much I'd hate to see a 1.0mm stamped gun in FA. or perhaps the flexing is just an optical illusion caused by trying to capture it to film (not enuff frames), kinda like how car's wheels appears to be rolling backwards (when going forward) on film. |

I've never shot at a target further than 100 yds, but can hit a piece of 8 1/2 by 11 copy paper at that distance offhand pretty consistently with most guns I own, even though I wear bifocal hunting glasses. Just helps to shoot a lot, and remember/replicate how you made that last good shot, I guess. Our club has 150 and 200 yd ranges, but frankly, I can't see that far using iron sights, and I own no scopes. Maybe I'll put up some BIG targets an give it a try... |
I love this comment:
Uh-huh. Sure you are.

How about instead of comparing a 1947 version of the AK vs. a modern m-16, why dont they test the most modern updated AKs vs. the m4?? to me THAT would be a fair test. Of course the 7.62 bullet will flex the barrel, but notice how they DIDNT show the flexing of the AR barrel? Though if you look you can see it. All barrels flex like that, and the thinner they are or the more powerful the bullet the more they flex. to me a fair comparison is what an ak that shoots 5.45 (or 5.56) and has optics can do against an AR with similiar width barrel and same barrel length with optics can do. Would anyone here consider an AK with a 20" barrel shooting 5.56 against a AR with a 10" Pistol length barrel shooting .308 to be a good comparison?? |
I noticed how they didn't really show the end of the AR barrel at first, I had to watch it several times to notice how the front sight was moving. I bet if you cut away enough of the front hand gaurd to see the barrel you'd see it flexing more. |
