You can't call yourself an American gun enthusiast without owning: 1. AK-47 2. AR-15 3. M1 Garand 4. 10/22 Those are the requirements from moving from "apprentice" to "journeyman". ![]() Seriously though, do get - or at least try - both and then make up your mind after actually shooting both. ETA: I prefer AKs. But I like FALs the best. |
So, with nearly 200 firearms after a sincere multi-year effort to consolidate I don't qualify as an "enthusiast" and am still an "apprentice" just because I've never owned a Garand? Cool! Everyone needs goals and ambitions...

You should make that just .22 rimfire. I'd never own a Ruger. Couldn't pay me enough to own one. Should have a lever action up there as well. |
| Good question, which has no answer. As for me, I love both my AK (Hungarian SA85M) and CAR-15 (a mutt, home-built, mainly Bushmaster). In the case of actually needing one of them, I have come to realize I would reach for the AR. Smaller, lighter, plenty potent with M855, no wood to get wet, etc. Still, you can't deny the AK platform is the longest in-service and most prolific military rifle/carbine ever. Don't get into 'stopping power' debates between the two. After all, didn't the Soviets adopt the 5.45x39, their version of the .223? The most important things are reliability, accuracy and your familiarity with the weapon. What's that old saying about respecting the man with only one gun, because he's probably damn good with it? Make a choice that's best for you and spend lots of time playing with it at the range. Get good with it and it will be your rifle. |
Can I get any points for having a JLD PTR-91KP (HK G3 clone) instead of the 10/22? |
1. AK-47 - I have three of these 2. AR-15 - I have four of these 3. M1 Garand - I have one of these 4. 10/22 - I have two of these Yes I have all four...and a HK-91 ![]() |
More than one each of the above PLUS an FAL - The Right Arm of the Free World |
Don't forget the crossovers: - The gas piston upper for the AR - You also have to try to make your 10/22 look like an AR... and a Krinkov - Then you have to get a rimfire upper for your AR The Garand you need to leave alone. I pity the poor soul who posts pictures on the internet of a bubba'd Garand. |
Yeah, the FAL is a necessity. If it were me I'd cross 10/22 off that list and add some sort of M-14 clone. Just my $.02..... |
|
Well, I’ve got AKs and arfs and like them both. I tend more towards the arfs though. To me the AK just seems like an "average tool," nothing more. I am however pretty geeked up about my little Krink build. Probably because it’s something new, and a bit of a novelty. |
1. I'm glad everyone got a kick out of that. And no, you need a 10/22, not some other .22, period. It's got to be the most prolific gun in America. It's "the right arm of the American trailer park". 2. No, the FAL is required to become a master. Because once you get the FAL, you realize that there really is one end all to all rifles, and that the FAL encompasses the best of the best of the best of all rifles. Once one aquires the FALage, one realizes that there is no need for any other rifle. |
Why outside of the snipers you can have the 44 the 38 and the 91-30 for about $300 hell get into nagants |
Oh crap! Again, I'm inadequate . No M1, though I do have AK's and AR's. I sold my 10/22 some years back. I suppose my replacement is my S&W .22 pistol. Can I substitute my Ruger P89 and S&W 645? Do multiple AK's and AR's in various calibers make up the difference? If not... I'll just have to reference myself as a "Gun Nut" instead of an enthusiast. Oh well... I'll just hafta go off n buy sumore guns. buckmeister |
How can ANYONE hate a 10/22? Seriously? How could you have a problem with Ruger. The guy was an American great. Think what you like, their modern castings are a million notches above the old Colt SA manufacturing process. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Ruger except the Mini 14 being an inaccurate plinker. |
Why Bill Ruger is a POS and can rot in hell, and why I'll never own anything with his name on it.

I can totally agree with you. I had my AR for about 6 months before i started thinking about a VEPR K, and now i don't even get excited about my AR. And it's a Colt LE6920! I have thought about getting rid of my AR but have heard nothing but horror stories of regrets people have when they get rid of a good rifle... so i think i am gonna hang on to it. |
|
I like both. The AR has features the the AK does not have. And the parts of the AK that make it better, todays designers are closing the gap. The round can be fired by an AR. There are even better rounds that can be used. In the end, the AR is still the superior. The AK only has the advantage left: that it is in every nation on earth. |
