It appears I'll be joining the  ranks of AK owners

My single biggest reason is because I don't own one and, well, I don't have any other reasons...

I only hope my ARs can handle it

I have an opportunity to purchase a Polish AK underfolder that was a build up.  The current owner is pretty knowledgeable and the rifle performs well (I am going to fire it again before the purchase).

he wants $500 negotiable (I figure I can get him down to 450, maybe lower).

Alright experts, should I pass or pick it up?

(1,500 - 2,000 rounds down the pipe total)

Thanks for the help gentlemen

Much depends on the quality of the parts used. Who built the receiver--is it home-built, or an OOW, NDS, Global, etc? is the first major question. Next is the condition of the kit. 2,000 rounds isn't much when we are talking about AKs, especially if it was in great shape before the build. Are there the correct number of compliance parts (needs to be 6 for a Polish build) incorporated into the rifle? Any mags or accessories? $450-500 for a Polish on a factory made receiver, with the right number of compliance parts, and with a  mag or two is pretty good, as long as the bore is in good shape. Hope this helps.

thank you for the help...

it'll meet the six part compliance, even without the stock handguards and pistol grip (which he still has)

two mags

not sure on what mfg. made the receiver, but I'll get the information.

the bore is nice and shiny...the guy is a cleanliness fanatic.

he's added a shitty red dot and equally poor furniture (tapcofuck may be appropriate).

thanks again.

receiver was built from a flat.

My question?  How can it be "Polish" if the receiver was a flat that was built in TN.?

is this a legitimate question?  Or can a Polish receiver flat be ordered?

Sorry for the assinine questions, but I'm apparently not "up to snuff" on my AK platform..

thanks again for any help.

If it was built from a flat and not heat treated that becomes a problem.  Polish kit, American bent flat sheet metal receiver = home made.  IMHO, buying a build you didn't make yourself or directly from a reputable builder is risky.

Risky, and also illegal if it isn't marked properly. The receiver has to have some kind of serial # on it somewhere, and have a city and state of "manufacture." When people refer to the AKs they have, we are mainly talking about the origin of the import parts. Thus a "Polish Underfolder" is not 100% Polish, that's just where the imported parts came from. It may be possible that the flat it was built from had similar markings to the original Polish rifle, but that is inconsequential. I personally would pass on a homebuilt that I didn't do, or wasn't done by someone who knows exactly what they're doing and who I trust. You can get a Vector UF with a warranty for about $600ish, and I think there are others running around for a bit less. Any more questions as you cross over to the DARK SIDE?

I would not buy a rifle built from a flat, period.
To many issues with the ATF to worry about. Plus, a flat costs what, $20? Plus a $200 kit and $100 worth of compliance parts, if he even used any compliance parts; what kind of finish, park? BBQ paint? $500 is a ripoff IMO, even if you wanted to take the risk.

Alll flats are not heat treated?

I assume that heat treating and then bending would result in the receiver breaking or over fatigued metal.

Are AKs as addictive as ARs?  If so, my significant other may require that I find a new place of residence...

I'll shoot the rifle tomorrow and present him with my findings.

thanks for the help guys!

My single biggest reason is because I don't own one and, well, I don't have any other reasons...

Sure you do.  Dianne FeinSWINE, Charles Schumer, Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy.

With NEW Vector underfolders hitting the EE for $500-ish lately, I'd keep shopping around.

I paid $500 for this gem, new in the box with two mags and sling...and got it via FTF deal. Probably the best money I've spent in awhile.
I added a Polish bayonet for $13.99 (on sale) from these guys:  www.copesdist.com/ak47.htm

The flat would have to be heat treated after bending.  You can legally build a rifle from a flat.  Selling it to someone else is where the problem may arise.  The rifle is not Polish, the parts kit was most likely Polish.

I would not buy a rifle from someone if it was homebuilt unless it was built on a registered as in commercially purchased heat treated receiver.  Legal issues.

Be prepared to have problems with the rifle in time such as wear of the trigger and hammer axis pin holes and possible failure at the rivets or screws if that is how it was built.

For the price you would be getting that you could pick up a professionally built Yugo or Polish build on a US heat treated receiver for about $75.00 more.  Why would you want to deal with the problems?
