I don't know alot about AKs but I do know they range from good to crap. I want to buy an AK underfolder and I don't want to pay preban prices. I saw some at the gun show last weekend and they were around 500.00 but I don't want to hang them out to get chopped off.

What is the highest quality AK under folder out there and can you guys provide me with some links.

I love my Polish Underfolders, I bought one and built 2. I hear good things about the Yugo's, but I have never had my hands on one.

Do you have a link or a brand name I can google? Thanks.

Vector produced an AK U/F.

Polish parts with Armory USA Receiver.

IIRC Atlantic is carrying them, and they give discount to AR15 members.

Are these double or single stacked mags? I heard the double were better.

There is a M70 U/F there too. Which is better? I am looking for a reliable range beater. I don't want a safe queen.

Edit: Are AK47 SSR 85 C2 by Armory USA any good? They were 20.00 cheaper.

I have an SSR-85C and love it! The fit and finish is actually quite good and it is fun as hell to shoot. Dead-nuts reliable and none of the problems (i.e. trigger slap) that you hear about with some others.

The Armory 85 c2 are very good. I have read rave reviews. Built on the 1.6mm receiver also.
The M70's are Yugoslavaian with US made barrels I think. Atlantic seems to be a up front company to deal with.

How do you guys feel about double versus single stack magazines? Is this something I need to be worried about? Is there a difference in capacity?

yes there is a difference in capacity. single stacks only go up to 20 rounds if they go that high. they were designed for the awb so the wasr10 could still be sold in the us. if i am wrong feel free to correct me.
the doublestacks range from 10 to 100 rounds. and i belive the only single stack ak rifles are the wasr10 which is also available in double stack but minus the mag dimples.

now that the ban is over there is no need for the single stack mags and they should all be destroyed

Get yourself a Polish underfolder kit: www.akparts.com/index.htm?744.htm&1
and then send it to these guys for a premium biuld and refinish job: www.mcarms.com/

You won't be sorry, their build quality is premium.  The can do a top quality finish in Blue, Parkerized, or Norrell's Moly, and also do top quality wood refinishing as well.

That is a nice kit, but where do I get a good receiver? So I would need:

1. Kit
2. receiver
3. Gunsmith

Right?

Plus six US-made compliance parts (five if you don't want a muzzle device).

Common compliance parts are :
1. Receiver
2. Fire control group (3 parts)
3. Gas piston
4. Pistol Grip
5. Muzzle device
6. Handguards
7. Buttstock (N/A if you want an underfolder)

Wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to just get the $600 vector folder from atlantic?

I've got about $600 in my Polish build from one of the well-known smiths...including the cost of the kit, receiver and compliance parts.  I like being able to talk to the guy who built my rifle and knowing it was tested before I received it.

I've had a Vector AK and still have a Vector Uzi.  Both were/are great guns, but I prefer the one-on-one interaction you get with a custom build.  Different strokes for different folks.

Yep, and if it is your first AK I wouldn't suggest going the kit route... get one... learn about AK's.. shoot the crap out of it... and then you will know exactly what type of custom build you want...

.... then you end up building your own... knee deep in AK kits and russian ammo... with a big smile on your face...

The guys at Missouri Custom Armamnent could hook you up witht the receiver and all the domestic parts you need, and they do top class AK builds.  They're quickly building a strong reputation for excellence here on the forums.  I am currently waiting on my 2nd AK build from them, a Polish underfolder, to follow my Romanian they already did for me.  Since I got the Romanian blued, I'm getting the underfolder Parkerized.
