If the BATF finds that a pistol is chambered for this ammo, then technically, its going to become "Armor Piercing", because of the steel in the core, even if it wasnt designed as an armor piercing round per se. The law doesnt differentiate between mild steel and hardened steel penetrators designed to go through body armor, or hard targets. |
921(a)(17)(B) the term 'armor piercing ammunition' means -- (i) a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or (ii) a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile. 5.45 7N6 fails the first definition because the core is constructed of both steel and lead. It fails the second definition because it is smaller than .22 caliber, even assuming that the jacket weighs more than 25% of the total projectile (which I doubt it does). 5.45 isn't armor piercing by definition. There were AK pistols chambered in 5.45 before this batch of 7N6 hit our shores, and it was still approved for import. |
