| I'm looking for a wood finnish that looks like the red finnish that the Russians used like a good color that I would be able to go to a local store and pick up.......I'm not into the whole home brew kind of thing so if anybody knows a good stain tell me |

Well technically you can go find Rit dye at the local store. Thats what I use...Theres no magic to it. You put the dye in denatured alcohol. run it through a coffee filter to get the salts out of it, and then rub it all over the stock. Staining is easy and the rit dye is about as easy as it gets.....Getting a nice topcoat of poly with no drips is the tricky part. |
I second that. You can't beat Z_Recto's refinish or his price. His work is amazing. Just FYI, you'll never be able to duplicate the Russian finish with stain or by dying the wood. Staining the wood will ruin the reflective properties that is unique to the Russian wood. The Russians used shellac and the color is in the shellac. If you do decide to do it yourself, check out the results that me223 got by using Garnet Shellac... www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=51&t=85408 If you want to see some incredibly refinished Russian wood, check out this thread... www.akforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3099 |
