Looking to get a shotgun for home defence and would like some ideas. Ive looked at the mossberg 500 and the 870. Pump or Auto?

I'm a huge fan of pumps since they are incredibly reliable.  the mossys are great guns, but dont overlook a winchester 1300 or a remington 870.  my only gripes about a mossberg is the inability to put an extended magazine on a regular one(not a problem on the 590 or home defense versions as they come with) and the location of the safety is a PITA if you install a pistol grip stock

Weird looking dust cover on that saiga-12 in the middle.

Pumps aren't as ammo-dependent as semi-autos but w/pumps one of the biggest problems is short-stroking under stress. The Saiga-12 is a great shotgun (used to own a couple) but 8rd mags are very pricey (main reason I sold mine) and the top loaded rd in the mag has a tendency to deform over time. I slightly prefer the Mossy 590 over the 870 because the loading gate is always up unless actually feeding a shell into the chamber thus allowing faster & more reliable reloading under stress (YMMV).

Mossberg just came out with a model that uses a 10 round drum mag and an over the top folding stock for about $550.00
