well stealing would be the cheapest route to getting a 5.56 AK...

but out of the options you listed, id say get a WASR-3, or SAR-3......or if you dont mind, get a Saiga in .223 and convert it to use high cap mags....

What's the going price on a SAR-3 these days? I have a WASR-10, and I'm completely happy with it, I'm just envious of dimples.

$380-440 for a stock/standard SAR-3

they are on the EE once in a while, but go FAST...they are hot items lately

in the past they couldnt give them away, because the issue of mags (now we have Weigers), plus people poo-poo'd the .223 AK

We have ALWAYS had the Weiger mags for the SAR-3.  interordnance sells them really cheap to this day.  They were actually designed and produced in Germany for the SAR-3 IIRC.

Wrong.  The SAR-3 is a Romanian rifle.  The mags were produced for an East German rifle (Stg940/Weiger ?) but East Germany no longer exists.  Sold as surplus and work in the Romanian SAR-3 rifle.

Just wait a couple of months for a Sig 556. AK design and AR mags. Supposedly under a grand and got the Sig warranty backing it up instead of relying on CAI's QC.

Is it worth it for all the hassles with mags and stuff?

SAR3s are worth it...I love mine.

I paid like $370 or so for the rifle by itself, $420 or so for the rifle, sling, kvar furn set, and 4 NIW weigers..

I wish we had kits of that EG rifle the weiger mags were made for..thatd be sweet.

I wish a couple of months...I think you'll be lucky to get one before fall.

Under a grand??  No way.  Demand will keep the retail prices up on these for quite a while.
Make it while you can. They will never be as pleantyful as a AR-15 type. I figure about $1200 for
a standard model shoule be the Good deal on them.

I went 5.56 on all my AK's. Mags are not really an issue because 74s are easily usable with a little follower work, course I have plenty of the other. Truthfully the SIG is going to be worth the waite- it will be the best of both worlds.

I got a NIB SAR3 recenty for $400. Got some Weigers, and it works great. Someone on here mentioned that modded Orlite Galil mags work too. I got some (35 rounders) for $10 a piece and they work well too.

-------------

When I PCS'd Berlin in late '91, I brought one set of StG-941 furniture, along with the bayo (not a typeical AK pattern), and the Carl Zeiss aus Jena 4X scope that I got at a local Flohmarkt (Flea Market).  Even got the StG bolt.  Also got an AK74A1 5.56mm kit from K-Var ages ago and some mags.  Will have to make a good StG-941 clone some day.

I bought a WASR-3 and added a K-var polymer stockset, modified a Romanian threaded front sight to fit, and added a Romanian muzzle brake.

I get about 2.5 MOA with her using Q3131 and my 4xVOMZ.
