| How do I remove the upper handguard (wood) from an AK. Looks like the metal end pieces are spot welded on that part of the gas tube? |
| I oiled mine really well and set the metal end of the gas tube with the parallel flats in it in a soft jaw vice and then just twisted hard on the wood with my hands to rotate it the 180 degrees to remove it. Getting the oil down in there under the steel end caps was the key. That Romy wood had alot of shellac/varnish on it! |

I thought we had a stuck thread in the ABC forum but....... With the gas tube off of the rifle, you'll see that the end that is closest to the rear sight when it's on the rifle has two flat sides to it. Take an adjustable crescent wrench and place it on the flats so that it's tight. Then you grip the gas tube cover firmly and twist one way with the crescent wrench and the opposite way with holding onto the gas tube cover. It should twist 180* and be able to be pulled out of the openening of the rails that hold the two edges of the gas tube cover in. Some people put the flat sides of the gas tube in a vice to get more leverage. Hope that helps. *Edited to add.........be carefull that you don't use so much force that you crack the wood cover, which is fairly easy to do if you put too much python behind it. Same goes for putting it back in. New stock sets sometimes will need a little fitting to go in well.* |
