What the hell does the little black button on the top left side of the rear trunion do .....I just cant figure out what it does

It's a latch that locks the recoil spring assembly in place, thereby holding on the top cover. Depress the button and push in the recoil spring tab to remove the top cover. The rifle was used to launch grenades, and the top cover needed to be kept in place.
