I am preparing to purchase an AK. I am considering an underfolder. I have not handled on since the ban in 1994.

Please refresh my memory and offer your advise or opinions.

Thank you.

Mucho cool factor.

If I remember the cheek weld sucks.

Are they solid when locked into place?

The underfolder is not as good for smacking someone upside the head.

The underfolders are very compact.
Shootin' them ain't so bad once you get used to them.
And the most important thing: They look evil.

Try operating the safety with the stock folded.
only drawback.

Most are pretty solid, but expect to develope some wobble.

There are really two types of underfolders....the original milled receiver type with solid steel struts that have much more drop to them, and the newer AKMS style that uses heavy gauge stampings and have very little drop to the stock, it comes straight back out.

Of the two, I find the original milled struts with more drop to be much more "comfortable".

Yes, cool factor is way high on these....

Templar,

I've always wondered whether the the underfolder stock with the more pronounced drop or the AKMS type was more comfortable.  Why is the milled receiver type more comfortable?  Visually it's always seemed to me that the AKMS one would be the more comfortable one with the better cheek weld,   not that I'm disagreeing with you since I've never shot either type.  Thanks.

Mine is the Norinco type and it has a little vertical movement but really like it. It took a little getting used too, by that I mean putting the checck on a piece of steel and then getting comfortable shooting it.

I've found that the stocks with more drop to them actually let you get a much better sight picture, the AKMS style stocks come straight out and you have to really put your face down on the stock to get a decent sight picture.  Also, the milled struts on the AKS-47 are rounded rather than squared off and are a little more comfortable.

Just works better for me.

On my Mitchell M90, the safety has a wing on it, the Yugoslav rifles should, that allow you to work the safety lever without any issues with the stock folded.

I actually cant the rifle slightly to the left when I have it shouldered in order to get a better sight picture.  If it had an AKS-47 stock, I wouldn't need to do that.

Actually now that you mention it I do find the milled type polymer stock on  my Arsenal carbine and SLR-101 with the more pronounced drop slightly more comfortable than the more straight stock on my stamped WASR.  I guess it's the same factor at play in relation to fixed stocks.

You should get one while it's on sale!

If you have any concerns about the buttplate on the UF... get one of these.
Recoil Pad for Underfolder Stocks
Excellent.

Cheek weld in the winter time is uncomfortable on the underfolder.  Otherwise they work good and I like the coolness factor.  They fold up very compact.

Pros:

Looks cool....like middle-eastern "fire over the ridge without looking to see where your target is" cool.
Easy to transport.
Looks cool (worth repeating).

Cons:

U-shaped bruise that the underfoler will leave on your shoulder.
Rifle feels less balanced.

Cons- None that I know of.

Pros- The Libs hate them
          They look so Cool
They make for a great truck gun
With the right sling, they cannot be seen when carried under a trench coat or oil skin duster

It would be great if you could carry one of these with a CCW.

Forgive my noobness here, but which do you AK gurus find more comfortable for shoulder firing?  Sidefolding stocks or the underfolders?

Thanks in advance,

H

From what I hear it's side folders hands down.

You heard wrong
I prefer the underfolder, the (wire) sidefolders don't give any cheekweld and the Romy is the worst as I'm lefthanded and it's offset to the left for righties.
Triangle and fullstock AK100 sidefolders are so pricy and bulky you might as well spend the extra $$$ and build a second full stock Romanian AK.

he said comfortable, not anything about cost.
So the fullstock AK100 series would be my pick.

Are the underfolding stock on the M70 Yugos from Century/DCI "straight back" or "dropped?"

I had a Vector UF with the straight back AKM stock and a Norinco UF with the angled stock.  As all have said cool factor is off the scale, BUT shooting them is a different story.  My experience is they are very uncomfortable to shoot, especially in prone.  I sold both and have gone back to fixed stock AKs.  Of course YMMV.

I prefer the AKMS underfolder for both shooting and carrying.  Fixed stocks just dont fit me right and side folders sting my cheek (although I havent tried an ACE). I think it depends a lot on your body shape and how you like to shoot.  You really need to try them for yourself.
