I just got a WASR-10 for 300$OTD. I really like it, and I was wondering if there was any way to "pretty" it up because the finish on the wood and the blue was kinda scratched. Its not metal deep. Is there any bluing stuff I should try. also, what should I do with the furniture? Is there any place with cheap plastic furniture? Thanks a million.

You could pour gasoline on it and set it on fire.

The above response shows that even in the AK forum you will find a snob.

Lighten up sister, it was a joke. Really, you should use kerosene.

Completely field strip, remove all the oil and grease. Use a spray on finish of some kind Alumahide, Guncote, or good old Krylon. Refinish the wood or ad some synthetic furniture.

Strip it down to the barreled receiver, degrease it with your choice of solvent. Oil everything, and reassemble.

Then go put a bunch of ammo through it, sight it in; pretty much get out and have fun with it! It's always fun to play with your new toy a little before you mod it, plus it'll give you a chance to make sure it works right first.

Then once you know what you like about it, start doing some mods. Replace the FCG maybe. Then you'll probably want to ditch the stock furniture, it really isnt that good. Unless you like it. Get some nice, new front grips for it, and butstock, or maybe throw on a romy/e. german side folder. And if you want to make the metal look better:

Get some kind of spray on and bake finish. Theres special kinds you can get, but I use 1200 degree engine paint. It's a nice deep, dull black. I just refinished one of my AK's and this is how i did it.
Strip it down to the barreled receiver, and get some high grit sandpaper and sand the finish off the rifle, sand the corners to take out any burs etc. I did this to the complete barrel and receiver. The finish doesnt take alot of work to get it to bare metal. I wouldnt recomment using a power tool as it might take off metal.

Once you have it sanded smooth, degrease it again. Get all the dust and flakes off/out of it. Then let it dry, or use a blow dryer.

Take the cleaning rod, or some of rod, and stick it through one of the wholes in the rear tang and hang it in your workspace. Spray on the finish you choose, lightly and evenly. Maybe practice on pieces like the top cover or something. Then bake it in the oven. If using engine paint, I bake mine in the oven at 350 for an hour.

In my experience, this is a very good finish. Doesnt scratch easily, and isnt thick and flake off. And it's cheap. I did this to my rifle, but i didnt paint the charging handle, and it came out REALLY nice. If your going to do this though, be sure to paint it as soon as you can after sanding, so it wont rust.

If your not sure if you want to do this to your rifle, try it on a mag first, thats how i tried out different finishes. Take the mag apart, degrease, sand and refinish. It's alot of fun working on rifles like this and they end up looking really nice.

Before you do all that, just sand smooth, stain and finish the wood and oil up the receiver and start shooting it.

Do the least before you do the most.

When i got my first WASR, i stripped it completely to clean and oil it. Lots of metal shaving bits and crud. It's a safety thing to me i guess. Dont really have to do that, afterall it's an AK, but i do.

www.k-var.com for stocks. Put a little extra gun oil on the outside and it will look better.
If your WASR10 is one of the new ones with bayonet / etc, the trigger group should be a G2 group and is a good setup.
Buy mags and ammo and enjoy.

Edit: By the way come join us in the Romanian forum.
