Why did they get away from the slabside..Is the ribbed simply stonger?

slabsides lead to dents. Dents lead to poor feeding. poor feeding leads to the darkside. Errr, the AR-15 side.

cuz the darkside doesn't jam. one of the big reasons is that are mags are as tough as are rifles. Well, your mags anyway. Crappy Krazy Kommuinist Kalifornia.
