I have seen the German raindrop mag pouches and the OD chest harnesses that close with the wood toggles. But I am wondering what did the Russians use? They were supposed to be our big enemy in the cold war but I never see any kind of webgear that would equall ours. What do you use now? I am thinking about a TT 2 piece MAV with the double pouches. Keep in mind that there has been a vast proliferation of web gear in the U.S. post Cold-War. Even until fairly recently U.S. web gear has been realtively simple, like the Cold-War Russian equivalent. And for me, nothing beats an H.S.G.I. Chest Rig |

Your average soldier during the Cold War wore a pleather belt, wool lined pleather suspenders, and wither a 3 or 4 pocket magazine pouch on the belt. Canteens, grenade pouches and E-tools may or may not have been used. Paratroopers from Afghanistan on wore the RD-54, a combination LBV and rucksack. It has worn with the same pleather belt, and I believe ony had room for 2 AK-74 mags. I believe there was a pouch for 2 grenades on the opposite side. Haven't played with mine for a while, so I'm getting rusty on the features. Occasionally you'd see soldiers wearing a chest rig similar to what the Vietnamese wore. Armored vests were also issued, covered in pouches. Later on, towards and after the fall of the wall, all kinds of gear came out, most direct copies of our gear. Sometimes it was a good thing, sometimes they sucked. Nothing like taking a bad design and making it worse! Nowadays though, the sky's the limit, though the average Joeski probably still gets a pleather belt and a 4 cell cotton ammo pouch. |

I can really recommend watching the movie 9-ROTA, it's in Russian from A-Z. But handles 6 young men drafted into the Red Army, send trough basic training and being sent to Afghanistan... Lots of AKS74's, gear and vehicles..... Bought the DVD from www.rusmilitary.com |
