| I have seen several 74 builds that use a 7.62 receiver. They are a little sloppy in the mag fit but run fine. Were the 5.45 receivers not available for a while or what? Why are there so many out there when the receivers cost the same? what are the big differences between the two? |
| Very interesting, thanks for the reply, is the sloppy mag the only downfall? DId anyone make ban 74 receivers or did they start comming out in the US after the expiration when there was a bigger market? I have researched this some and it seems that FEG sold through Armory was a very popular receiver to build with some years back but I can not find info if they were all in 7.62 or if they also made/sold them in 5.45. |
| IIRC the first commercial '74s to come im were the romanian ones in 1997. there were supposed to be a couple of Norinco(?) ak74s that came in very near the start of the 1989 import ban. IIRc these were supposed to be sample show pieces. then the ban an they disapeared. i remember seeing the guy that owns AA-OK.com post pictures of the one he owned (a few years ago now). but for all practical purposes there where no '74s receives before 1997. Ohio Ornadance Works came out with their stripped receiver next. IIRC all the FEG were 7.62. From what i hear if the conversions were done by a good smith they are very reliable. if not you would be better to throw rocks. i remember peter kokalis recommending ASD to do that kind of conversion a number of years ago. IIRC if done right there is little/ no mag wobble. I never had a pre-ban AK do do a conversion on so everything i have learned/stated is purely academic. |
