This is my first n00b question in a very long time so please bear with me..... I had a lifetime of exposure to ARs, M1s, M1A's and a myriad of other fine weapons all of which you pick up and you can instantly feel the solidness of the weapon. With my short time here at ar15.com I've picked up the curiousity of what the AK world could hold for me. Any good recomendations that would net me a decent solid weapon that doesn't look like Goober knocked it up on the kitchen table (I'm not flaming here)? I wouldn't bat an eye if I ended up building one up from scratch so I could control look, feel, and function if that's what it takes. Maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places. I'm sure there is at least one other person that seeing a badly hand engraved receiver is just a turn-off. * Should I be looking for a specific set of manufacturers? * I've seen the comparison charts of the variants but do some outshine the others? I hope I've been clear enough and welcome conversation to bring another AR guy into the AK world. Thanks in advance. |

Where in WI? If a regular poster here is local there, then handling beats typing ![]() SAM and VEPR are on the short list of regular production AKs that are rather easy to just order. Of, course, a metric shitload of other options exist, including a long list of calibers. |

I'm an AR guy that wanted to join the AK world also. And coming from an extensive AR background I wanted a solid weapon and not some rattling, wobbly rilfe with canted sights. I ended up with an Arsenal. They are built ROCK SOLID, fit and function is perfect. They are also decently accurate (for AK). You will end up spending as much on an Arsenal as you would an AR but in my opinion it is well worth the cost. Just my .02 |
My SAR is fine for what it is. For the record, it jammed once on a bad mag. I'm not the one that keeps a rubber protector on the charging handle of my AK.........at all times..........*cough* ghey. Aresnal's are nice, but damn man, it's still an AK. And finally, the Polytech owns both the SAR and your Arsenal. ETA: Get a Polytech and don't look back. |
I've had my Vepr for about a year and a half. The Vepr doesn't have the handgaurd retainers for normal forends, so no unless you can find a way to add the retainers. I have seen this done on Saigas, so it may be possible on the Vepr. I honestly believe that if people would hold and shoot a Vepr, they would find the forend is far superior to standard grips. |

Arsenals are ggggrrrreeeaaaat! So nice in fact, I'd get nervous with it bouncing around in my trunk. A nicer SAR1 will be just as reliable though, and you won't cry if you scratch it. Matter of fact, every Rommie I've seen came from the factory with a lovely selection of scratches and dents. |
Yes, but at that price level $600.00 will either buy you a top of the line AK, or a bottom of the line AR. A good average AK like an SAR-1 or even a newly built vector will cost less than $450.00 Don't get a WASR . Those are the ones everyone talks about when they are mentioning an "ak" that rattles" and shakes loose. They have a very "rough" finish, and usually have canted sights. They still fire when you pull the trigger though! |
Interesting pic from your link. ![]() If only the folks are Robinson would finally come out with that side folder they have been promising for years. |
I thought Mikhail Kalishnikov was russian?!?!?!
Not that old trick.. we all know that a VEPR wont take traditional AK furniture but anyone who owns a VEPR knows thier furniture is better. And VEPRs are more than "Decently accurate" I would put a stock VEPR against a stock AR any day. ![]() Get a VEPR or a MAK 90 both great guns, but if you want to fit in around here get an arsenal. ![]() |
