I was watching a episode of ANTIQUE ROAD SHOW.......yeah I admit it, I watch it. anyway they had a piece on how to test if the bakelite jewelry you own is really bakelite and not plastic.......it basically is taking a pan of hot water, putting the piece in and moving it around, then taking it out and smelling it........if it gives off a strong smell to it, I think she said a petrolum smell,  then it's bakelite, if not it's modern plastic.........so being curious, I took one my soviet bakelite mags, and a east german mag and did the test........nothing, no smell..........so that begs the question if it's not bakelite, then why is everybody calling it bakelite?

I always assumed that we called it bakelite because it resembles bakelite.  Not that it is necessarily bakelite, but that it appears similar to bakelite.

I once heard a scientist talk about it.........Russia and the United States took two completely different roads to get to polymers and phenolic resins, their bakelites throughout the 20th century is not going to be like our 1930s-1950s bakelites
