IMO, the pre ban Norincos and Polytechs with the deep blued finish and nice blonde wood are the best looking AKs. The AK-74U is probably the coolest looking, unless you count the Galil Micro. The ugliest, IMO would have to be the AMD-65. |
| The AMDs look like bottom of the barrel cheapness even for an AK, but at least that is understandable on a utilitarian level. Nothing quite matches the Finn Valmets and that Czech AK-derived rifle when it comes to inexplicably horrid aesthetics. Were they trying to make designs that looked like they came from the nightmares of M. Kalashnikov? |
I can understand a certain "cool" factor with the AMD, but to me it is down right fugly. It looks like some of the hollywood guns with the extra prop stuff stuck on it. I don't care for the ergonomics either. I never could use to the feel of the backwards foregrip or the re-bar style stock. |
Some of us like to keep our AKs looking nice. I try to keep my SKS looking nice even though most people consider SKSs to be good beater rifles, I also try to keep ALL my rifles looking nice. Ben |
Like all of my weapons, my AK is a tool first and foremost. However, that doesn't mean that certain design features can't be more pleasing to the eye than others. |
if we were AR guys we would be posting about what kind of useless junk we can hang off a AK, to make it more rediculous looking and heavier..........there is nothing wrong with making a AK looking good, ie. refinishing or replacing the furniture.........just as long as we don't start adding AR parts and lights and lasers and other worthless do-dads to the thing........which when it comes down to it, very few AK folks do that.......the ones that do, well lets just say they took a nice looking weapon by itself, and made it stupid looking. YMMV as they say |

Being an owner of an AMD-65, it is by far just as good as any other ak on the market. I have only had it for about four weeks now and it was built by Chris Butler @ AK-USA. It is probably one of if not the nicest AK that I have. I was quite mixed about how it would shoot and feel with the forward pistol grip and wire folder, but it was suprisingly comfortable and when rapid firing it is very controllable. You are all open to your opinion on the AMD, but this is mine. My question is this, how many of you that say it's an ugly gun and that it is not comfortable have actually even shot one or owned one? |

Best looking?? I'd have to say the SA-85 Yugo gun for the stamped version, and the Polytech legend series milled gun for the Milled version. Ugliest?? ANY AK with AR crap on it. They just look wrong. Kind of like those cars you see with the 12" wheels and a Bazooka tailpipe...Very silly looking. KyARGuy |

Best looking, any ak beat or not as long as there is no AR parts on it. I don't really care what condition it's in as long as I can toss a mag in it with what ever ammo I happen to have at that given time and it eats it up. Worst looking of course would be any AK with AR parts on it but that can be fixed. |
|
Best: early AK74 with laminated wood ChiCom Type 56 red bakelite sidefolder with M1919 style grip Worst: any AR15 wannabe AK ![]() MAK90 with blond bunghole stock most evil: AMD-65....not one but two pistol grips+ a folding stock
|
| I think all AKs look pretty cool, but my ugliest would be anything with Tapco trash on them, or as others said, AKs with AR junk on them. Tactical and AK do not go together. I will give honorable mention for ugliest AK to those Russian imported sporter rifles, but not by their choice obviously. |
|
Oh man the E.German's are ugly...That spakle turd brown is unpleasant to the eye's to say the least AMD"s would be uglier if they did'nt work so damn well , ..

80's AKM style w/ laminate wood or Laminate wood w/ underfolders....Slab Sides Magazine a must. (Jugrunner will probably be the only one to agree with me on this) a very close second is an RPK with the clubfoot and drum hanging off the bottom. Worst - Personally, any AK that has stuff made for an AR or FAL on them. i.e. a lot of the tapco stuff we see floating around here now. |

Best looking: Russian all the way. www.aa-ok.com/Gun%20Gallery.htm tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/proindex.html Before looking at some of these it might be best to get a bucket ready for drool. By the way...an AK that is dressed right is WAY better looking than the any FAL, any H&K battle rifle and any AR-15. The only assault/battle rifle that looks as good is a really nicely set-up M1A/M14. |
That is a good looking S.O.B. |

Now that's a good looking Valmet, pure weapon! Here's mine which I'm quite partial to, a .308 M-78 stamped receiver from 1983, again in my favorite style with synthetic grip and hand guards. ![]() ![]() |
That is just awful! |
Dude, I love ya man, but I hate you too. I miss my Valmet M62.............. And you probably know just how rare those tube non folders are here in the states........ |
You take that back! I like the E. German 74 for some reason...my SAR-2 thinks it's one at the moment, sure beats the hell out of the original "orange" wood. Looks great with the bakelite mags too.Best: Bulgarian AKS-74 (AR-M1F?) or Russian AK-105, either in plum. I love that look. Close second is any clean-looking underfolder with nice wood, Russian preferably. Underfolders are classy. Worst: The "AK-15" crap everyone else has hit on. Sure, do what works for you, but geez, I sure as hell wouldn't brag about that one. Get back in the closet! |
+1 Glad to see I'm not the only weirdo who likes the EG style. My Romak2 is currently dressd in EG furniture. I wish somebody made 5.45 mag followers/floorplates so I could use the proper EG pistol grip though. Or a USA copy of the East German grip. The EG plastic may be fugly but it's a proper 'commie', form follows function ugly & correct for an AK, unlike the "tactical" AK-15 stuff. |

Ok, I'll admit that the AMD furniture and ergos leave something to be desired, but the UGLIEST AK's out there are the WASR's. I say this as the proud owner of a WECSOG'ed WASR that runs like a top, but the metalwork is atrocious.. Mill marks everywhere, stuff aint on straight, FSB looks like a burned matchstick, the wood is terrrrrrrible, the original bunghole stock was badly executed and felt like shit, and the metal's prone to rust. These things weren't made by monkeys, they were made by ASSHOLE monkeys. The fact that most of them run fine and can put rounds on target is IMHO the ultimate testiment to the design of the weapon. The AMD's ARE ugly, but the individual parts that go into that ugly are so much nicer. |

try and trick out like M4 carbines
AKs are not about pretty, their beauty is in their function and reliability and evilness
