When I was in Vietnam in 1969 I captured a Chinese AK47 with under fold stock and spike bayonet. I have always wanted such a gun for my collection. I want to shoot it and I want a quality piece without spending a small fortune. The more I look on this site with all the new items available I cannot make up my mind how to get into a gun like this at an affordable price. What do you gentlemen with much more experience with the AK 47 suggest. I have one AK Norinco under fold in .223 with fixed bayonet. But desire the above-mentioned piece. My true passion is the AR15. Just a complete novice with the AK world.  Would I save a lot of money going with a fixed stock and spike underfold bayonet? Or should I skip the Underfold spike and focus on a fixed stock AK with bayonet lug?
Looking to spend 750-800. What do you think?

In that price range, if you hunt for it ALOT, you should be able to find a fixed stock spike bayo Chicom AK. That's the route I'd go.

For a double u-folder, you are going to pay a decent amount more.

The "double underfolders" are relatively rare here in the US.

Polytech only imported them briefly prior to the 1989 import ban, which shut them down.

There are better Chinese AK experts than me here, but I think the going rate for a Polytech pre-ban double underfolder is about $1K or so.

The fixed stock Polytech preban rifles with the folding spike bayonet are a little less money.

If you can live without getting a Chicom AK, you might want to look at the Vector rifles with the Global Trades receivers.  You can get both underfolders and fixed stock AKM's from them for around $500.00 or so........they're built using excellent condition Polish, Hungarian, or Bulgarian parts kits.

They have a pretty good rep, and a five year warranty.

Hope that helps, and thank you for your service.

Double folders are great looking guns. As mentioned hard to find for under $1K. It will cost just as much to make one from a 56s-1 too. Unless you really have to have a Chineese AK which are really great, I would go with something milled from Arsenal Inc. YOu can not beat a milled AK. I have an SLR100H (Bulgarian milled receiver w/ Hungarian AK47 parts kit) and I am aquiring an SA-M5 (Bulgarian milled AK47 in 5.56)

You should have kept the one you captured!!

I'd LOVE a double folder.   I just don't want one bad enough to part with the cash one would cost!

A friend of mine has a Poly-Tech double underfolder that he paid $1200 for about 3 years ago.
It is a nice rifle, shoots good too. I think he got a decent deal considering it was unfired NIB.

Thanks for the help on this. Who are thr dealers out there that sell quality AK's that are good guys. In the AR15 world there are several on the EE that I trust 100% for example Chris at Eagle Arms. Looks like I should go with a no ban fixed stock slant muzzle break and bayonet lug. This would be in my price range. Looked at the Arsnel site couldnt tell if they really had anything for sale. Sent them a e-Mail will see what they say. I am used to ordering AR15's way below dealer cost who offers this in the AK world?  I have a local FFL who gives my copy's of his liscense to send as I want to buy guns. He is a great guy as well but doesnt really hold or buy Many guns.

Thanks for the help

For an Arsenal inc. Bulgarian AK I would have said FAC but they are having money problems and are currently out of the business.
