I have an AK that was given to me and the guy who had it previously attempted to change the 45 degree gas block to a Vulcan 90 degree gas block. After trial shooting and testing it fails to achieve enough blowback to chamber the next round. Today I knocked off that Vulcan POS and the gas port in the barrel is still at the 45 degree angle. The guy I got this rifle from really did a number on it but I think it is salvagable without a lot of work.

My questions are:
Should the gas port have been drilled to a 90 degree angle to match the gas block to achieve blowback???
Doesn't a Bulgarian gas block in 7.62x39 have a .594 I.D. ???

I've asked Newton some questions but I know he's busy so I'm throwing this one to you guys ...

I am no expert, but in my humble opinion; I think that the gas port in the barrel should have been drilled at ninty degrees to the bore.

It sounds as if your gas port is partly blocked and not enough gas is making it out to make the gas piston move to the rear. (Assuming that there are no other problems like the bolt carrier binding in the rear sight block, or the bolt carrier dragging on the hammer, or the bolt carrier will not move freely over the top rail and bottom rails, or there might be a problem with head space causing the round to swell in the chamber making it difficult to extract the spent case.)

Thanks, I thought the port should have been redrilled, as soon as I saw the port I thought it wasn't right ...

This is a factory Intrac and I know the rifle worked great before the guy started monkeying around and changed the block. There's no binding at all and the action is really smooth. I checked it out fairly well before I tested it. The rifle is accurate enough for me as I was nailing a 16 in gong at 300 yards with iron sights(single shots, LOL) so the barrel seems good ...

yeah, it sounds like the piston is not getting enough gas to move it to the rear.  I am not really sure how I would go about re drilling it.  You could put the 45 degree gas block back on.

PS  thanks Templar for the big thumbs up!

I found I had a block from a SAR-3 in the parts box. The front of it will cover the 45 port and it definately has to be redrilled for a 90. It looks to be the same dimensions as the Bulgy block I want to use ...

Anyone have an address for Pookie's site ...

Thanks, his site doesn't tell me much more than what I already know but it does verify what I do know ...
