I noticed the other day that the spent casings from my AK (saiga converted to 7.62x39) had a large bulge right after the shoulder, probably about 1 to 2mm.  This was from Wolf steel case ammo, I have never had my SKS do this. I emailed the manufacturer (Vulcan arms... i know, shame on me) about this and they replied that steel cased ammo tends to do this, and the head space is probably not bad if i haven't had any malfunctions (which i haven't).

Is the info from Vulcan correct? Should I worry about the bulge??

Thanks!

It would worry me. You need to have it checked out by someone other than vulcan.

Measure the area to be sure it is not a funny visual from uneven laquer, And gauge the chamber.

"and the head space is probably not bad if i haven't had any malfunctions" it's all fun till somebody puts an eye out....

I read a thing a while back that said the Saiga's are supposed to do this.  It said it was because they manufacture for the civilian population only, and it's so the police in russia can tell the difference in a case fired from a civilian weapon and a military weapon.  I can't remember where I read this though, so YMMV.

That would explain why the cases fired from yous SKS (military gun) don't do that.  For what it's worth, I noticed the same difference in cases fired from my cousins 7.62x39 Saiga (not converted, he bought it new in that cartridge) and my SKS.

I guess it wasn't really a conversion, the reciever is stamped 7.62x39, but it doesn't look like the sporting model, it's got all the typical AK stuff: pistol grip, folding stock, etc.

I'll try googling that info jaqattack02, thanks.. i'll still get the headspace checked.

The newer 7.62 Saiga's are designed to do it, for the reasons stated above.  Google it, lots of people are asking the same question.
